Do you know the prices of the bikes you have looked at? Are you sure they are under €1500 (to make it €1000 assuming you get full tax relief)...

    dolan mythos - 1,050
    dolan mavic - 1,270
    beone - 1,110
    Lapierre RLite 400 - 1,045
    giant defy 1 - 1,159

this is really the price range i'm looking at (recession and all) - so should bring my cost at about 5/600

havent tried any yet but dolan seems to be best spec for this price? also heard trek might be worth looking at
    tks

Tax relief only applies for the first €1000 of the cost. You can still buy a €1500 bike but you'll pay up to €450 (€550 tax relief on first €1000 + €500 for amount over €1000).

tks for that, but i know the tax system - really only want to spend 5-600 and get a decent bike for road racing and maybe doing duals/tris. any comment on the bikes listed would be great or any others
    Thanks

Revenue of offering the tax incentive scheme because the bike has to be for the primary purpose of commuting to work. This will depend on how closely your employer police's the scheme though.

guys - i really appreciate the tax advice and even the ethical advice, i promise i will use bike primarily for work, however i really would appreciate some advice on what bike is best value

Need a little more to go on than just the makes. Groupsets, wheels, finishing kit?

Giant and Dolan would be on my shortlist without any descriptions.

See - now this is why i need advice, i have the specs but basically from the internet (and apage long each), doesnt seem to be a wild lot of difference but that could be my ignorance....

what about bike size for 5'8"?
    thanks

I'm too lazy to search for the bike you list but if you want extract and post:
    Frame material
    Rear Derailleur
    Front Derailleur
    Chainset
    STI shifters
    Wheels

Maybe a 54cm or 52cm frame might suit you but best try one in a shop. Some frames have sloping geometry (crossbar) and so traditional sizing may not be the perfect fit.

If you like the Dolan go for it. These are great bikes.

Didnt expect this but Thanks a million - sounds like DOlan is the one
    Dolan Giant Defy 1 Lapierre R-Lite 400
Frame material fulll carbon 12K composite Alloy 7005 DB
Rear Derailleur Sora Shimano 105 Shimano Tiagra
Front Derailleur Sora Shimano 105 Shimano Tiagra
Chainset Tracer Shimano R600 34/50 Shimano Tiagra
STI shifters Sora 8 Speed Shimano 105 20 spd STI Shimano Tiagra
Wheels shimano hubs Giant custom Snohimano WHR500

Think you're sacrificing componentry for a carbon frame by the looks of things on the Dolan. A perfectly upgradeable bike if you really get into cycling.

The Giant would be a better buy for the here and now IMO.

I don't know the ins and outs of each of the frames, but like you, I heard "full carbon" and thought to myself that in that territory, you are heading closer towards €2000 as opposed to €1000, hence my original post.

However, I fully respect that as with all bikes, there are ranges in carbon bikes, and of course groupsets and that one can certainly build a carbon bike for the 1000 mark.

I dont want to be a backseat mod, but it really might be best to create one super thread for these maybe even a sticky. Seeing as we are having a great summer a lot more people are interested in cycling and this scheme adds massively to the appeal.

So it might be best if we create one thread for dealing with, what bike can I buy for €1,000.
Especailly seeing as much of the advise being offered to each person who asks will be the same as the last.

thanks for that - just spoke to a dealer who said the Dolan are too cheap to be good but then he doesnt stock them so hes probably not reliable, and he tried to push the lapierre. anyways from what you guys say i think its between the Giant Defy 1 (which the dealer says in unavailable countrywide???) or the Dolan so that looks like a simple one unless i'm advised otherwise

thanks all - if i pass you on the roads some day i thank ye in person

If I remember right, the sora shifts have buttons to shift down instead of levers like the rest? This in itself is reason enough to cross out the Dolan.

The Giant is out of stock as the new one (2010 model) is due in the next two months.

    Fair enough
last one then - if you had €1100 (€600 + €530 tax back) what bike would you buy and where would you go for the best deal??
    thanks again

My company, unfortunately are dealing with Halfords, so, I ordered the Team Boardman,http://www.halfords.ie/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_11101_catalogId_15551_productId_502035_langId_-1_categoryId_212536

I also asked them to leave it in the box when it arrives and I will collect as is

Recently purchased a Dolan Mythos money well spent Im tellin ya....Ultegra drivetrain 105 brakes and shifters Mavic wheelset absolute dream to ride it was thrown in at the deep end responsible for getting me around the wicklow 200 , tour the burren and more recently,Saturday just gone actually the ring of kerry with considerable ease and more importantly pleasure 10 /10 as far as I am concerned

Agree with you on that. It was pointed out to me today that it's awkward to change gears when you're low down with the thum shifters but apart from that I've had no problems with them.
