Is it the foghorn at one of the lighthouses in Dublin Bay? That gives a roughly 5 second blast every minute or so during fog. It is clearly audible all along the south of the bay and presumably the north also.

From what you describe, it could be a pile driver at work. They are used when making deep foundations for buildings in soft ground areas. Poles are driven in inch by inch until they reach bedrock. This can take days and can be heard over a wide area.

Heard it there tonight too, on Clonliffe Road. Very creepy!

it carried on with litterally one fog horn or 2 every minute. it stopped at 6am. anyone know why? it seems there were like 4 separate fog horns (different pitches)?

A fog horn wouldn't explain why the ground was also vibrating!

I could hear it in Whitehall and I know people in Drumcondra who heard it too. It sounded rather like a ship's horn going off regularly!

There would be much irony in that given the OPs username

Martian Tripods. Go find a journalist that sounds like Richard Burton when he talks and Justin Hayward when he sings.

I live in the area surrounding Dublin Port and it is a fog horn. Sounds a bit like a ships horn going off. Drives me mad and it was going off again last night. It starts at around 10 or 11 and then doesnt stop until all hours of the morning. I know on the southside of the river it is very loud.

    Hope this helps!
