    hi all,

apologies if this has been asked before. thinking of doing a hdip in second level teaching. Would really like to get some sub teaching in though to gain asurance that I will have enought pts as per info in the www.pac.ie website and also for my own experience to see if I would actually like the thing.

Im in Dublin, what is the best way to make sure I get some teaching hours in september ?.... send a letter to all the schools about the place ? ... I would be pretty flexible in terms of hours, days ... etc

    thanks in advance

    eoin

I am in a similar situation. Do you mind me asking what subjects you would like to sub for and how many hours do you reckon you will need?

I myself would like to get hours doing business subbing.(but would take any subject if allowed). I need three points I reckon. I know that is alot of hours so I am focusing more on a 2010 application, being realistic.

And before everyone writes in with the 'education cutbacks' negative speak, I am aware of this and I know it will be difficult.

So any tips regarding applying for jobs would be great.

    Thanks!

Most schools already have teachers signed up for the Supervision and Substitution scheme. Any available hours would go to them first.

We had people in last year looking to make up hours. They team taught with us and essentially acted as assistants but were paid nothing. All the hours went to the part-time teachers. Did this myself as a young teacher, you'll do anything to get in if you're like I was. Worked evenings then to keep myself a float!

Your best bet would be maybe to go to your old secondary school.

Two or three years ago, what you want to do would ahve been both very easy and very common. However, with the way things are going at the moment (1) Supervision/Substitution will be alot harder to get, and most places may be snapped up by now and (2) Permanent teacehrs are being stretched to their limits - doing alot of that supervision themselves now.

But I do agree that TP is something you should try to get before applying for the PGDE. Not only for the points, but also, as you say, OP, to see if you like teaching. The PGDE course is not a cheap one, it's estimated that it will be about 7,000euro this year. It's not an easy year either.
