Thinking of going for a surf holiday in mid august to either France, Spain or Portugal and was thinking of San Sebastian. Just wondering what the waves are like there in August.

was in san seb at the start of august last year for ten days. Firstly its a beautiful city with a great party atmosphere. It has one main beach for surfing. It also has another beach but it only works on big big swells so don't be expecting that in august. Like anywhere in europe during august, the waves can be fickle. If you look at the forecast for spain, portugal, france, it looks flat for the forseeable future, just as it is here but you never know what you might get.

Of our ten days, we surfed nine of those. Of the nine days we surfed we had two days of solid head and a half clean surf. The other days there were waves but from a local windswell so nothing amazing but still fun. The main beach is very busy with surfers and bathers. We also spent one night in hossegor and got a good session in there. Its only 40 min from san seb.

If you are looking for pumping surf you may get it or you may get nothing being august. Nonetheless if theres any surf its so sweet being in the water in only board shorts. Also theres alot to do in the city and area if theres no surf and the nightlife rocks. Id recommend it for sure, that whole coastline in general. We enjoyed it so much we're getting the ferry this year and spending three weeks going up and down the coast. If you want better surf wait till sept or oct but you may as well just surf here at that time of year as ther are less crowds

Have been there in August/Sept for last 4 years. Always a few flat days but when the waves hit its well worth it. As for the apres surf in San Seb...can be a little wild and make you do bad things to your liver...loads of breaks all the way from around Biarritz to Bilbao. Hire a car in Biarritz airport and get your map out!

Only there once, on day trip from France. Waves dumping right on the shore that day. Stayed for a few days in a camp-site south of Bidart, overlooking a nice surf beach. Found it better and quieter than Biarritz at the time. It's only around 40 mins from San Seb.
