I used to be self employed, can I claim dole?

Hi, I was wondering if anybody has been in the same situation as me, I was self employed for 7 years but I am not working now, I have been told I cannot claim the dole because i used to be self employed. Does anybody know if this is true or there is a way around it. Thanks.

Yes - you can apply for Jobseeker's Allowance - it is means tested, so if you have a partner their earnings will be taken into account. If your business hasn't been wound up, you will be assessed also on potential earnings.

Apply - it's a long slow process.......
