Compact Crank vs Standard Front Derailleur

Hi, following a recent hilly spin I decided to purchase a Compact Crank to replace my Standard Double. However I never thought about my current Front Derailleur (Ultegra) would react to the change from a 53/39 to a 50/34? Am I worrying about nothing, or is a different FD required?

    Thanks

    G'co

Your derailleur will be fine - you'll just need to lower it on the seat tube slightly.

Thanks for the info, I presume a link or two will have to come off the chain as well?

I am citing old age / arthritic knees as the reason for the change. Anyone who saw me struggling up the Sally Gap would guess an obvious lack of fitness, but it was the knee pain that had me gasping for air, I swear it was, no really..

No dishonour in switching from a standard double to a compact.

A triple on the other hand. Oy, for shame.

    You selling the old crankset?!

I hadn' t thought about it. Why not? It is about 3 years old, I am sure there is some wear on it. I would be keeping the BB cups for the new crank though.

I'm a proud triple chainset owner...Better to have a triple and not need it than to need it and not have it! (plus the fact that I'm not as fit as i should be..but don't tell anyone!)

Triples are for non-euro wimps.

Hey, I'm in the same boat.

We can but offer up a petition to St Cipollini and seek forgiveness. And possibly organise a group-buy of long-chained gold crucifixes.

Old Ultegra I presume? What length crank arms?

Dunno, its a Hollowtech as far as I know, 172.5 is the crank length. Possibly a FD 6600?????

Was bought with the intention of doing some nice flat triathlons - not being able to swim has stunted my growth as a triathlete somewhat.

Would definitely be interested, let us know anyway!

    I've a spare Ultegrea 172.5mm 53/39 here - I think I'll impale myself slowly on it now

(Mechs should be okay, just the positioning)
