Though I am not drawing any inference or making any suggestion whatsoever, and I only saw coverage a few times on the news, it seemed to me that she was pictured hand in hand with her husband during every day of the case itself, but they dropped the public displays of affection after the case closed.

I have no time for the gutter press of Independant Newspapers, and something had to be done. But on the other hand she has received a number of awards now, I think the courts should have taken into account that everyone knew the accusation and now everyone knows it was false because God knows she has dragged it through the courts enough times. And they should also have taken into account that, while noone can suggest she and Cullen had an affair, there are other pertinant questions such as how much did she make out of their (business) relationship, how precisely it started, it is usual for PR firms to get so much benefit, did she get contracts on tender or how etc. etc.

I think this libel award is madness. 1.87 million for this? Heard on the radio that daily mail were comparing awards. A woman that was brain damaged after giving birth got less than a million. There is no justice in the world. She does deserve a certain amount of money if the jury does feel she was libelled....but more like 250k based on precedence. This is a joke.

If it was just her good name she wanted, wonder will she make a huge donation to charity.

A PR consultant gets 1.87 million and then the department won't pay out to a woman who dared question them for being abused by her school principal? Makes a joke of things. Who decides the award amount - the judge or jury?

Jury does. They public likes to give the press a good kicking over libel/slander.

er..do you mean the person that lost a case and owed costs to the Department?

your statement twists things just a bit i think!

    Yes and no.
She took a case against the department becuase the teacher concerned was employed to all intents and purposes by the department of education, or if you chose to say he was employed by the school management he was damm well paid by the department of education.
He was monitored by the department of education in carrying out his teaching duties.
Yet when it came time to be responsible for the fact he was a child abusing c**t it was nothing to do with them obviously

    Sounds familar at all ?
Do industrial schools come to mind and the fact that the state committed children into the care of these institutions. Havbe the sdtate revoked any of the criminal convictions it attached to these children ?
    Have they fu**.

By the way there is another case pending where Donal Dunne was belatetly kicked out of chirstian abusers and subsequently hired as teacher.
He was actually reported, but authorities did nothing bar move him to a new school where he continued his abuse.
Funny how this poor woman lost her case.

Back on topic Leech is a very apt name for this woman.
She enjoyed very high paying contracts courtesy of her relationship, whatever it was, with Mr Cullen.
Of course he may have only being adopting the bertie principle and looking after his friends

BTW if it does come out subsequently the papers allegations were right, much like Liberace case in 50s, will she have to give the money back ?

I am not allowed discuss …

Award is ludicrous and shows up why insurance etc is so high in this country. The awards from the courts are just nuts.

Maybe in defamation, but in PI they have changed completely and become much more in line with the UK since control was vested in the Injuries Board, hence the falling insurance on cars in recent years.

Well juries aren't always completely stupid.

Ms Leech's damages will be paid by independent Newspapers.

The other woman sued the state, so her damages would be paid by the taxpayer. ie us.

It's always easy to make big awards with somebody else's money.

She would have got a lot less money if Tony O'Reilly had actually physically assaulted her and left her with a few broken ribs.

A bizarrely large settlement for fairly mild print media slander.

The Heralds biggest mistake was that it was a lie that they ran a campiagn on, it wasn't a one off, I think thats why the award was so large.
