Hey. I'm planning on going to Trinity this year and I was wondering what the difference is between living in Trinity Hall and commuting in every day.

I have a grandmother who lives close to UCD which is only a short bus ride away, so forking out 4k for accommodation seems pointless. I'm just wondering whether I will miss out on much by living away from the rest of the 1st years.

I live beside UCD and commuted every day for the past two years, only ~20 minutes on the bus each way (rush-hour depending!) so it's not bad. The main benefit of Halls over your granny's place that I can think of would be that there would always be students around you and you'd get to know people automatically as part of an extended Halls clique. This could be handy if you're coming to Trinity without knowing many people, but really, living at your granny's isn't going to impede you in getting to know people or participating in college life, you just might have to put in more effort than saying hi to your flatmates every morning. 4 grand is a lot of money to pay for that sort of privilege.

I'm moving out this year, 3rd year, 'cause it's high time to and I got the opportunity, but I don't think it would have helped me to move out in first year. Wasn't mature or self-controlled enough!
