hey guys i have a 40gb hard drive with world of warcraft, flight simulator x and some japanese game that takes up 1gb. these three games use up most the drive. about 1-3 gigs is used by norton 360, printer software, itunes and windows programs. at the moment i only have 100mb free space. any way i can free up space without uninstalling these programs???

Apart from running a defrag i dont think that there is much you can do apart from buying an external HDD.

you can run CCleaner (deletes at least half a gig every time i run it), and do a disk cleanup in windows (it's under programs -> accessories -> system tools).

btw, i can't see how Norton 360 should be taking up 2-3GB. Have you old backups stored you don't need?

you can buy an external with 1TB for about 80 quid now. that'd be my investment

you can get a 1TB external for about €90 online.

Are we talking laptop or desktop? laptop you can get 250GB for ~€60 (maybe slightly more with postage). Desktop, you can get 500GB for about the same price. However they are SATA, you may have IDE (slightly older type of drive). If that's the case i've no idea on prices. you would need to check your manual what type of drives you can add.

Btw, an external would only be good for files, photos, music, videos. You wouldn't want to install a game on them, the read/write time would be unplayable.

Defrag shouldn't affect the amount of free hdd space I'd imagine.

If you've had World of Warcraft for a long time, it might be worth looking in the directory, it actually keeps all the patch files it downloads (so you could reapply them to a fresh installation later). You could remove those to cut the space considerably.

You might find something like this useful too to graph your hdd usage:
