Basic Guide on How to Set up surround sound with PS3

Ok, so can anyone help me to set up surround sound with my ps3.

What do I need to do or get for it to work?

Firstly, I have a pioneer DVD system that came with 5.1 speakers, all of which work perfectly for the surround sound when watching DVDs in the pioneer player.

I'm able to use the sky box through the surround sound speakers, but it isnt in surround sound, if you get what I mean, its just in stereo in 2 speakers.

I'm wondering how can I set up the PS3 to get the full surround 5.1 sound out of the games. I'm guessing I will have to connect the PS3 to the DVD player, something along those lines.

I've attached a Picture of the back of the dvd player, what the player looks like, and back of the TV encase that helps.

Also, im using a Philips HD TV, and would like to use the surround while also using a HDMI cable.

First picture is of back of TV, second is of back of DVD player, third is what the pioneer player looks like.

    Thanks.

Get an optical cable, and run it from the digital optical out on the back of the ps3 to the digital optical in on the back of the surround system. Think i seen one in the pic. Im viewing this from my phone though so dont hold me to that!

Exactly as Ferrigan said. Run an optical cable from the PS3 optical out to the optical in on the back of the DVD player and youre all set. You may need to change your sound settings on the PS3 too.

Where do the wires for your speakers connect in to? I can't see them in that image. Also, if your system allows for HDMI out it would be better to use that over Optical.

Right so, I found an old optical cable i the house here, plugged it into ps3 and dvd player. But now I dont know what to do. Like is there a menu I go too on the player or something? The player is called a Pioneer XV-DV88 if that helps. I have set up the ps3 audio settings for optical cable too. Not sure what to do next though...

have a look in the ps3 menu. where you should be able to choose the sound source. make sure the dvd player is on (as otherwise it may not play the sound through the speakers)

Ah I found it after alot of searching online and some random button presses. You have to go through some menus on the player to get it. Seems to be working now, not sure if its in 5.1, but ill see soon I guess.

    If you go to
    settings,
    sound settings,
audio output settings (it will say at the bottom of the page turn on the power of the connected device)
    select digital out (optical)
then I'm assuming you want to choose dolby digital 5.1ch (but the ps3 should pick up your dvd player automatically)
then X and it should be done i think.

Right so, I got it working fine with games, and with the DVD player I have that is the centre of the surround sound, on the display of it, when something is in surround sound, it shows that it is on the display by saying DTS or Dolby Digital.

But when I play a blu ray, this doesnt happen. It wont play in surround sound as I put my ear up to the back speakers, and no sound was coming from them.

What would be wrong? Is there something I have to do for blu ray?

You may have selected audio codecs that aren't compatible with your amp.
Possibly something like disabling Linear PCM, and selecting an alternate output codec may solve the problem.

I had a similar problem like that at one point and i *think* that was the cause.
    Tired, and can't remember fully.

IGN have a good video on how to get Blu Ray playback setup correctly here.

I fixedd it by just changing the blu ray audio settings to Blitstream.

    Thanks for the help guys.
