Heard from a Google employee today that the company will be leaving Ireland in September, for the Netherlands. Any body know if this is true?

ask your 'friend' what's in the Netherlands for Google that isn't in Ireland.

Dont think there is any truth to this at all, I have a few friends who would be quite senior at Google and they have said the opposite that they will be expanding in Dublin.

The "friend" rang my wife on friday crying because her husband had been let go by Google and saying that the company is moving to the Netherlands in September. Doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me, can't see what it is they would gain by the move.

Do you not think it might have been mentioned in the media?

Yes I thought there should have been something in the media alright, but thought also it might only have been decided on Friday maybe. Don't know anything myself. If it's true we'll hear soon enough.

Used to work there myself, have many friends who still do. I can't see the whole operation moving anywhere at the moment anyway. Certain sections have always been moved about, e.g. the Google Checkout operation in Dublin was moved to Poland.

There has been a hire freeze, at least in their sales and operations department, for most of this year. I know a number of experienced, ex-Google people who went travelling hoping to be rehired in their position on their return but that's just not happening (I'm not one of them by the way).

Google have a massive datacenter in the Netherlands, and are hiring for there. http://www.google.com/support/jobs/bin/answer.py?hl=nl&answer=74846

Most people in Google Dublin don't work in the Datacentre, so are going nowhere. Though, yeah, there are always people coming & going... the production team are still hiring in Dublin for a start.

what your "friend" might have been told is that his Position is being moved to the Netherlands - just a way of getting rid of someone who doesn't join in on the impromptu dungeons and dragons re-enactments.

In the IT world 'production' typically refers to a live service where an outage would cause an impact to those who rely on it. For example, providing/producing metadata for search purposes would probably be classed as a 'production' service at Google.
