putting a 1/8" half-link into a 3/32" chain

OK so I'm helping this young lad work on his first singlespeed, only problem is that his dropouts are really, really short, and the chain is either too long or too short. I got a half-link but its only a 1/8" link, can this go into a 3/32" chain alright? Oh maybe that'll cause problems too with the teeth on the chainring…
