Hi. I am currently working a 3 day week but will be getting layed off in august. As i have known this for 4 months now i decided to go back to college as a mature student and will be starting a good course in September.

Can anybody fill me in on what allowances i am entitled to as a mature student? Do i need to be out of work for a certain period of time to be eligible for a mature student allowance from the social welfare?

    Any advice greatly appreciated.

    Thanks for the Links Eoin.

It seems that i need to be unemployed for at least 78 days before i can apply for a Back to Education allowance which is a similiar payment to Jobseekers allowance.

This seems crazy because in order to become eligible for the BTEA payment i would have to leave my job now to be in a position to claim the BTEA payment by September 16th. If i leave my job now, i have to wait 9 weeks to claim Social Welfare.

From what i have read, i can't claim the BTEA allowance for the first 2 months of the course because i am being layed off less than 1 month before i start the course which means i won't have any income for 2 months unless i can find a part time job.

Yet if i was long term unemployed, i could claim the BTEA allowance just before the course begins. I've already payed for the course and i'm worried now that i won't be able to do the course now. Is there any way around this?

Has anybody been in a similiar situation and if so, is there somebody i should contact. Thanks for reading.

You are currently on a 3 day week? Do you have a casual jobseeker's claim open at the moment? If you do that would count as being unemployed and go towards the 78 days I think.
