    Hi,

I passed my driving test and want to apply for my full drivers license. Can I just give all my stuff(forms, photographs, etc, cert of competence) into my local motor tax office and pick up my license a few hours later?, as I would prefer this than to have to give in all my details and wait for them to post the license out to me.

    Cheers.

    Dan.

Most tax offices post it out, it only takes a day or two max if you're done it over the counter though. They usually don't start the run till after the doors are closed for the day.

I know that in Cork at least they still did handwritten licences not that long ago - they may still do. In this case you get them straight away. But I haven't seen one in a while.

The reciept they give you when you hand over your documents covers you for driving.

Not to be pedantic, but the reciept technically doesnt cover you for motorway driving. But you'd have to make a major **** up on the motorway, and get a garda in a very very bad mood for anything to happen... just to let you know..

Thanks for your replies. Im aware that I get a receipt and can still drive on this receipt. What i want to know is that can the motor tax people sort me out a drivers license in a matter of hours/minutes so that i can collect it that day rather than having it posted out?

    cheers

Head in, get in line with form, photos and cert of competence and they will issue it there and then. Takes about 4 mins not inculding the line for waiting!!!

But AFAIK, you are legally required to be accompanied (if applicable) until you have a driving licence.

Very few MTOs offer an over the counter service - Cork and Limerick only I think. Most will take your details payment etc. and post out the licence.

I remember when i passed my test years back and applied for my licence.
A week later i was walking down my road, it was pissing down and i spotted a small brown envelope on the path and could see the pinky colour contents as the envelope was coming apart in the rain.
I picked it up and inside was my new full licence!!!
The postman must have dropped it.
I had to bring it back to the tax office and look for a replacement as it was ruined.
