I need to finalise my cao this week and ive finally decided on biology and maths teaching...but where can i do it? Im kind of set on going to cork and i hav biological and chemical sciences in ucc (CK 402) as my 1st choice and i hope to get my degree in physiology. Im fairly sure this will allow me to do a postgrad in teaching for biology but can anyone confirm this for me? Also im worried that just teaching biology wouldnt give me many job opportunities so i was wondering would this course allow me to qualify as a maths teacher? There is maths in 1st year and an elective maths module in 3rd year, would this be enough to allow me do a postgrad in both biology and maths? Any help would be appreciated because im running out of time now. Thanks in advance..

    did you try UCD

I do know a biology and maths teacher, so I know that it is possible. Unfortunately I don't have his number to ask him

    sorry, but keep looking

There are many biology and maths teachers around who graduated years ago, but colleges have changed since then. In the past if you wanted to be a science teacher then you did a 3 year long degree and specialised in 3 subjects (and then did the H.Dip). The 3 subjects could be a huge number of combinations – maths, biology and something else was a perfectly acceptable degree allowing you to teach both maths & bio. But courses have become much more specialised, maths & bio don’t seem to be a combination that is offered in many degrees nowadays, not that I have seen anyway.

That particular degree in physiology will allow you to teach biology. But in order to teach maths 30% of your degree must be maths, so those three maths modules are not enough.

You should check out the site www.teachingcouncil.ie it lists recognised degrees and what they allow you to teach.

    Hope this helps!

There are currently only 2 courses in Ireland which will qualify you to teach Biology and Maths. If you would like to know which courses qualify you to teach what subjects the information can be found on the teaching council web site.
