    heya

i'm over here in california for a few months and looking to pick up a new 32gb iphone 3g s.

been looking at AT&T - who i'm currently on - and broke it down to the following.

    $299 for 32gb white iphone 3g s.
$69 per/month tariff including data bundle.
    $175 contract cancellation fee.

so that would work out $443 for the phone + $69 for the first month.

i plan to cancel the contract after the first month.

will i have to return the phone? judging by here http://www.wireless.att.com/cell-phone-service/legal/plan-terms.jsp all i'll have to do is pay $175 for cancelling the contract early.

another thing is, is there a software unlock for the iphone 3g s yet? i'm not too pushed if there isn't as i can live with my iphone 1st gen until it will be unlocked and jailbroken.

    thanks in advance.

I'd be interested to hear how this went... I'm in the US for 3weeks and looking to get myself a smartphone (iPhone, Motorolla Droid or Palm Pre etc) while I'm here

They all seem tied to contracts, so I'm hoping to get one and cancel it almost immediately... paying $175 doesn't seem so bad verus trying to get one sim free

its the cancellation thats the easy bit!
in order to buy one in the first place you need a social security number iirc or some sort of proof that you reside in the states legally and work there.

I'm going to NYC in February, so realistically, is there any point in me looking into getting an iphone 3gs over there if there's that much red tape?

    Thanks

I have thought about this myself but whichever way I look at it I am still paying 100's for it. I am determined not to buy an iphone in ireland because of the extreme expense and for principle reasons. I am still searching for an economical way of owning an iphone or maybe theres no such thing..

Australia or Italy, factory unlocked iPhones but getting them os the trouble ie. travel etc

my father in law is going to Thailand in Jan but i dont know if there factory unlocked over there or not?

my friend is going to Australia in Feb to visit my cousin so i have the chance to buy one online and get it delivered to my cousins house over there and get it brought back!

    decisions decisions

I'm doing J1 in summer so I will be working there. What ya think the chances of getting one are? :)

As long as you get a social security number when you get there and pay $500 deposit then you'll get one.

Me and booyah (the OP) were in the states last summer and got iPhones no problem once we had a SSN.

I'll write a more detailed post later when I'm off this fecking bus and hopefully mods might stickify it as it's becomming such a common question.
