Has anyone been able to do this? I hear you can let your laptop (conencted by RJ45) to broadcast a wireless signal so your iphone can share the conenction. A friend in work has been trying to do it - followed the instructions but so far it won't work. Maybe its different with the new 3.0 software.

    Can anyone advise please?
    Thanks

I'm interested in this as well. Could come in handy in the office.

Sounds more like bridging two connections - the wired LAN and laptop wireless connection.

I'd say you could do it via Internet Connection Sharing in the Properties section of Network Connections.

I found this: http://www.intomobile.com/2009/06/15/tether-your-iphone-3g-now.html - but don't think its applicable for Ireland

You need to set up an ad hoc wireless network (How to do this depends on the wifi adapter). Then you need to share your ethernet connection and set up a network bridge to connect the two. I have never done this for an iPhone but I have done it for other devices and it works well.

well its pretty easy to do in windows 7

open up "network and sharing center"
click "set up a new connection"
click "set up a wireless ad hoc"
    click next, and next
call the network whatever you want and set up no encryption

now plug in you iphone via usb and select tethering option
    now bridge the two connection

I haven't tried it with the new iphone firmware, but I will update when I do

That's if you want to use the 3g connection on you iPhone. But what the OP wants is to use the ethernet LAN connection on his laptop which connects presumably to an ethernet router and basically turn his laptop into a wifi access point.

oh right, then you just bridge the Ethernet connection with the wireless one.

The way I suggested will allow you to bridge you iphone with the office.

Thanks, I wonder if this is any different in XP?

On my friends phone, when he tried to enable tethering, it gave a message about going to the o2 website. Thing is his is a UK 02 phone - not sure what to do.

Zascar are you using windows to manage your network connection? Or are you using your wireless adapters proprietary software and if so what model is it?

I use windows way to manage the wireless adapter. It's a Toshiba R500 Laptop and the Wireless Adapter is a Intel Pro Wireless 4965 AGN

Here's what you have to do in a nutshell:

1: Share your (wired) LAN connection (do this in properties)

2: Set up an ad-hoc network using your wireless adapter (use no security for now, when you get it working, you can add security)

    3: Bridge the two connections

Easy. :) All of this is done in Network Connections and settings.

I'd give it a go now, but I am trying my damndest to set up a reverse proxy in Apache and not having much luck.

Ok so this is how you do it (I hope)
    1. Right click on 'wireless network connection' and select properties
    2. Navigate to the 'wireless networks' tab and click the 'add' button down the bottom
    3. Type in a SSID name of your choice
    4. Disable data encryption (it's easier but if you feel you need it you can use encryption i can give you direction)
    5. Check the box beside 'This is a computer-to-computer (ad hoc) network' and click ok
    6. Connect to the newly created network
    7. Back in the network connections window slect both the 'Local Area Connection' and the 'Wireless Network Connection' and right click
    8. Select 'Bridge Network Connections'
You should now see the wireless network on your iPhone and be able to connect to it.

I have wireless system working at home on my laptop and iPhone, which I set up from scratch last month.

I basically plugged my modem into the wireless router and followed the router's CD instructions on my laptop (while the two were connected by ethernet). This created a wireless network, which can then be access from any wireless device (subject to a security key).
