    Hi all,

Has anybody insured their iPhone with somebody other than O2 providers???
Is the €9 a month the best/cheapest option out there (other than running the risk of an unisured phone)

    Regards,
    Keith.

It's not a great insurance, either - if your iPhone breaks you have to wait three weeks for a replacement. The only option while you're waiting is to rent a loaner - some crappy Motorola or something - from Carphone Warehouse or whoever you've bought it from, to cover you for that three weeks.

But if you buy Applecare, at least you're covered for hardware failure - in that case Apple couriers you out a new iPhone and you send back the old one, and the only fee is money they hold until they get the old iPhone.

Still no help if it breaks, mind you. For the price, they should give you a loaner iPhone even if it breaks, not a crap old phone - after all, you're paying for an expensive plan.

Is hardware failure (outside the warranty) covered by O2's insurance?

Yes, Keith, it is, or so they told me when I bought it - but you'll have to wait three weeks to get a new or repaired phone, while still paying top dollar for your plan.

Will double check that when I sign up on Friday - have had an insurance claim in the past where in being honest and said it stopped working basically was not covered - if I had dropped it down the toilet it would have been covered!

Minimum monthly price of iPhone then = €45 + €9 = Not so cheap!

hello, if you are on o2 billpay and enable the insurance online with o2 after buying it they only charge six euro a month for insurance.

Is that not the second level of insurance though - that doesn't cover the value of the iphone?

If you have home insurance, I suggest you enquire with them and see does your existing policy cover it, or can it be amended to cover it.

I just did that yesterday (BOI insurance), and, for a nominal fee (10-15 quid per year!) they will cover a mobile phone on my existing home insurance policy for worldwide loss, theft or accidental damage. I just have to name the phone on the policy as a "high-risk" item. My excess is only about €150, so I'd have to pay that on any claim myself.

It's probably not as comprehensive as dedicated mobile insurance, e.g. I don't think it would cover the costs of calls made on it when stolen, but its good enough for me I think.

    It most certainly is not!!!!
Mechanical breakdown read the policy and you will not wait 3 months its 10/14 working days

This is surely a no-brainer. I am planning on getting the iphone tomorrow if possible but paying 9 euro a month is abit much i reckon for insurance. It would break my heart if i lost phone or it got stolen so cant afford not to be insured either. Its a pity there are not more options for people really. I am going to call BOI about adding it so thanks Joe for that suggestion!

I wonder would it raise the premium much if you did make a claim though! its a tough one!

I got a quote for €25 to cover my iPhone for the year when I get it without having to pay any excess-anyone got an idea how much you should insure the phone for? Thinking the same price as a phone on PAYG.

25euro is alot better than 9 a month. Nice one.
Sorry i dont know how much it would be to replace but i suppose the same price as PAYG (either 16gb or 32gb).

I bought an iphone in the us I'm looking to insure it over here but I'm useing it on vodafone any ideas on who will insure it against loss stolen?

A colleague informs me he added his iphone to his house insurance for nada and up to a value of €500. I have also read elsewhere under apple warranty you can pay €29 for a new iphone if your own is faulty.
Can anyone confirm that these are both 100% true?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,933 ✭✭✭Sniipe

Would home insurance insure against accidental damage... I'd hate to drop the phone and have it ruined only to find out that it wasn't covered... currently with my carphone warehouse insurance it is covered.

I signed up at carphone warehouse for some insurance for my 32gb 3gs iphone. It is costing 13euro a month. I think it covers everything according to the guy at the shop.

    I upgraded to a 3gs from a 3g..
3g insurance was €6 per month that covered up to the value of €500 I was told. An the €9 insurance was anything over the value of €500. I had been on the €6 euro insurance for over a year,
so when I upgraded in the carphone warhouse I didn't take their insurance as it covers the same things. They told me to ring o2 and make sure the new 3gs was insured rather than the 3g.
So I did, and the lady have me this spill....

The insurance is now €9 mandatory on all iPhones!
As the value is over €500 on ready to go. I asked to to explain why a I had paid €299 for a bill pay 3gs and she just repeated that it was the value was over €500!

Can anyone tell me is this right!?
I'm not letting this one go!

    Karen.

You used an Upgrade which is subsidised and not the full retail price of 500.
There is also an amendment to the policy that states the Iphone is 9 euro insurance

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,933 ✭✭✭Sniipe

What D-Boy said is true. My Iphone which is 32gb costs 600euro I was told. The reason you are on a contract is because O2 are selling you the Iphone at a discount, for one reason.

Also the insurance (which I got yesterday because I quit the carphone warehouse one for 13euro) is 9euro ex vat, which makes it 10.94 including vat.

If you sign up to the insurance online it's only 6Euro.

Go to Extra Services when you sign up.

    Quote from there site
    "
The monthly cost of cover is 6 Euro per month if you buy online through My Account regardless of the replacement Value of the phone.
    "

Does anyone know how long it takes to get a replacement 3gs 32gb from phonecover?
I've never dealt with them before as i've used cpw who are very fast.

The O2 reps on their forum specifically say you have to have the €9 option.Your 3gs will not be covered if you claim.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 602 ✭✭✭savic04

yeah i activated the Insurance online for €6 but got a call from 02 to say my phone is now a 3gs which is €9 per month

I might ask my house insurance for cover too, but the excess if only €35 on the 02insruance and €100 on the house insurance, so the money you save you will prob end up payng on excess.

That's shocking if that is the case. I insured online and received no call.

As i'll say again there website clearly states this by the activate button for insurance.

"Insure your mobile against theft, damage and unauthorised calls with Phone cover insurance. The monthly cost of cover is 6 Euro per month if you buy online through My Account, regardless of the replacement Value of the phone."

If what your saying is correct, this is false advertising. If I was to claim for a loss of phone, I would be making a complaint to consumer affairs if they didn't pay up in full and let them deal with it.

if you click on the info button you will see this message

    What it costs
O2 Phonecover costs just €6.00 a month. This cover applies to mobiles worth up to €500 replacement value.

    What it costs
O2 Phonecover Extra and Speak easy Insurance Extra cost just €9.00 a month. This cover applies to mobiles worth between €500 and €1,500 replacement value.

I've seen that, but that drags you off to a page about 02 insurance. It's not part of the "My02" which is for users who log in. I'm not arguing the case that it costs 9Euro if you order insurance over the phone etc. I except that. What i'm saying is that it clearly states if you order it online through My02 it states it's 6Euro.

i know I agree with you..

I told the girl who rang that it didnt state that on your site...
but at the end of the day, they wouldnt do it unless I paid €9 so had to go with it ...

Hi guys just reading your posts and its helpful if i was on O2 lol

My question is, i just got an iphone 3gs 32gb on prepay from vodafone and they said they don't offer insurance for prepay phones that i should ring CPW, i contacted them and they said cause the phone wasn't bought in there store they don't offer it. can anyone point me in the right direction please.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,706 ✭✭✭120_Minutes

O2 reps really should know that Cpw only insure phones they sell.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 853 ✭✭✭case_sensitive

I want a 32GB iPhone bad, my phone's on its last legs.
A SIM free one from the UK would be £599, and I could get a Vodafone microSim for it with data for €20 a month, which saves you in the long run (2 year contract costs €960 + €299).
BUT how do you get it insured? I live in a shared house, so house insurance isn't an option.

;) Thanks, I know how to read. The policy says breakage but it seems like it's "incidental". So the nature of the incident may be important. What is it that is covered really? Dropping and breaking? If it falls in the toilet?

That's good to know:rolleyes:. Seeing as different companies have different policies, and you didn't say which you have, its a hard question to answer.....

Lost my old iPhone 3GS last week, literally within a month of switching from O2 to Meteor and losing my insurance... Going to buy a new iPhone 4 now from Apple and stick with Meteor, but confused as to what to do regarding insurance..

Most of the online ones I've looked at don't cover loss, which is what I'm most afraid of after last week... I'm thinking maybe get it covered with my parents' house insurance, does anybody have any experience with Aviva in this regard? Like, do they cover the iPhone? How much is the excess? And will they cover a loss?

Thanks to anyone who can help!

i'd say adding it to house insurance is the only option at this stage

Forget it I'd say. I had mine in my house insurance until I discovered the excess was 250 with aviva. That's ok except they will only pay what you paid for it and not the replacement cost. So I paid 320 for an 18 month contract if I loose it the insurance will only pay up to 320 with an excess of 250! oh and they charge 50 euro premium.
