At first I thought it was just another useless invention solving a problem that really isn't worth solving.

Then I thought of the secondary benefit to manufacturers... less packaging as it would fit into smaller boxes.

But still, hard to get any enthusiasm for it.

A user commented on the designs between US and European, too true! The US plugs look like they are going to fall out of the socket anytime.

I really hope someone makes these, it would be incredibly convenient. Looks like the sort of think Apple might do.

    This thread fails.
I was thinking butt plugs? ear plugs?
    No....just..................plugs.

i'm the clumsiest person i've ever come across in my entire life... today alone i've bumped my head 3 times in really stupid situations.

i have never, not even once stood on a plug

why in the name of god would anyone leave a plug prings up in the middle of the floor?

cool invention though, make things like phone chargers, straightners and hairdryers alot neater for traveling

f*** apple, they would make them fit a specific model of i pod only and you would need to ring a 1800 number and give credit details to use it on other products

Sheesh, what's with all the anti-Apple fanboys?! I was just saying that this looks like the sort of thing they'd be interested in. Apple has made folding plugs and has experimented with different plug adapter designs in the past e.g. the US iPhone chargers and the Magsafe thing.

It would be best if it could be wired easily like the current plugs so that you could retrofit old equipment.

Well I've stood on a plug. Still seems like a gimmicky idea that won't catch on tho. Their main selling point is that it 'saves space in your luggage', as tho the plugs we use now are currently the size of bowling balls or something?

For comparison I recently bought an external HDD that runs off USB instead of the mains. Now that was a breakthru idea! However a plug that folds up making a teaspoons more room in your luggage is not.

Sounds intriguing, but would it pass the ultimate test?

pretty clever, looks way neater than a standard plug... wonder if they have it patented

Won't be easy to retro fit something like that... The wire would most possibly be molded into that swivel point...

But I expect people will not bother refolding them flat once they take them out. I could not imagine folding it saying "better fold it since I am going to leave it on the ground and might step on it". If you are that concerned about stepping on them you would not leave it on the ground where it is likely to be stepped on anyway. And as there is more mechanisms in it if you did stand on it then it is more likely to break, so even more reason to hide it away if unplugged.

The only good thing is the little handle, but a lad on dragons den had a good one to fit normal plugs.

Yeah but its aimed at mobility - they plan to target the laptop market etc.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 520 ✭✭✭batari

Laptop type market, yes. General use, not a hope.

This is one of those ideas that will just get walked all over...

    ...I'll get me coat...

The problem doesn't arise if you just cut the plug off and jab the wires into the sockets (after sticking a matchstick in the earth socket). The only downside is the occasional charring and afro hair-do, but at least you don't hurt your feet.

How about a USB charger for a notebook...by charging the notebook it's perpetual energy keeps the notebook running and in turn keeps charging the charger :D
You'd need a fully charged notebook to begin with maybe and the charger fully powered but from then on in you're flying it.

my idea so don't fcukin steal it anyone ;)

Brilliant idea. while they were at it why dont they make them easier to wire like putting spring instead of sh1tty screws in

I'm looking forward to the smart power outlets. http://www.ted.com/talks/john_la_grou_plugs_smart_power_outlets_1.html

Very cool idea. The plug on my netbook power adapter makes it next to impossible to close the bag with it in it.

My laptop bag looks like it is pregnant when I throw in the monstrous plug. However as much as we step on plugs and moan about them they are the safest plug in the world.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 86,729 ✭✭✭✭Overheal

yes, fuses and all that, but theres no need (clearly) for them to be so incredibly bulky anymore.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 359 ✭✭jigglywoo

The plug should instantly collapse when you stand on it so it saves your feet.

Oh yes, I stood on a plug once, terrible pain. I also threw a spare plug directly at a younger kid's head (by accident believe it or not, he came from behind a wall) when I was younger, nearly knocked the poor little fella out.

They're painful, dangerous things them plugs. :pac:
