periodontal disease woes

    Hi,

I have recently been diagnosed with having periodontal disease. The periodontist said I caught it at the right time in which to do something about it. He said rounghly about 5-10% of the bone had eroded.

I chose to see a periodontist as I am having a problem with my front lower incisor. The gum around and under the tooth (and only that tooth) is red. The redness under the tooth extends about 1cm down from the base of the tooth and the tooth feels very weak when i tap on it.

I am wondering if anyone has experienced anything like this?

On every website I have read that contains info on periodontal disease, it says that the symptoms are red gums, soreness, swelling, bad breath, not nice taste in mouth, etc...I have none of these symptoms.... but on no site does it say "a weak feeling in the tooth".

Because of this, I am starting to wonder is it perodontal disease or is it something else.

The problem I am having is that I have been to many dentists (3 or 4) and they all have different opinions on what it could be (one even told me that there was nothing she could do and it is just going to fall out). Now I am trying to find a hygienist as it being periodontal disease makes the most sense out of all the opinions Ive had. However, the problem Im facing is that the longer it takes me to get something done, the worst its getting.

    Therefore, my questions are...
    1. How long does periodontal disease last before a tooth is lost.
    2. Is a weak feeling in a tooth associated at all with periodontal disease?
    3. Taking my description into account, if this does sound like periodontal disease, does it sound like "advanced" periodontal disease?

    thank you.

    d.

your initial decision to go to a periodontist was the correct one and his diagnosis was also correct. you subsequent searches on the internet are sowing doubt and causing you confusion. going to find a hygenist ( who is trained to clean teeth)for a second opinion on the periodontist's diagnosis is not the best course of action. if you really want a second opinion go to another periodontist.
if you have 'gum disease' the tooth ,among other things, can feel weak like you describe.
your other questions can't really be answered without seeing you except generally speaking with proper treatment and home care, perio disease can be arrested. And i think your periodontist suggested that yours has been caught in time.
