Beer is better than water for post race hydration!

In honour of DP and his carb loading methods I am delighted to tell you that drinking water is officially a waste of time.
Researchers at Granada University in Spain have come across a discovery that will undoubtedly please athletes and sports enthusiasts - a pint of beer post-workout or match is better at rehydrating the human body than water.

    It gets better:
The subjects in the study were asked to run on a treadmill at temperatures of 104F (40C) until they were close to exhaustion. Once they had reached the point of giving up, researchers measured their hydration levels, motor skills, and concentration ability.

Half of the subjects were given two half pints of Spanish lager to drink, and the other half were given just water.

Garzon said that the rehydration effection in those who were given beer was "slightly better" than those who were given only water. He also believes that the carbon dioxide in beer helps quench thirst more quickly, and that beer's carbohydrates replace calories lost during physical exertion.

It even recommends 500mls per day for male athletes in training. I love science :)

I would guess that in the situation presented in the test, there would be many many better products for rehydration than beer.

Better than beer for rehydrating? I'd say lucozade, gatorade, powerade... anything with "ade" for a start!

Surely the alcohol isn't doing you any favours.

Non-alcoholic beer would probably be better.

    And Aldi´s Explosade!

Anyways, they were just saying that beer seems to work better than water. They didn´t say it was the holy grail.

There is nothing on this planet as sweet as the pint after a marathon, or as satisfying if you were happy with the race.

Last time out I felt like I was going to throw up straight afterwards. Went for a pint anyway and couldn't finish it. Very disappointing, it was a sh1te pint and all! Other marathons I've had a skinful afterwards and enjoyed every drop.

First I heard on the radio this morning that moderate alcohol intake was good for you (albeit in conjunction with a mediterranean style diet), and now this! I'm going to live for ever at this rate - just need a study now to prove crisps are good for you too :)

Hasn't it already been proven somewhere that the salt in crisps helps replace the salt you've lost from exercise ?
    ;)
