Barton Shield / Senior Cup eligibility

Just to check with you guys, it seems to me that the usual 4 cards from the previous year rule for say, Barton Cup or Junior Cup, does not actually apply to Barton Shield and Senior Cup. There's obvious logic here, given that handicap plays no part in either event but still, I wanted to be sure that a new member who had no handicap in '08 could play this year.

Tournament conditions say "25. In order to be eligible to compete in the Junior Cup,
Jimmy Bruen Shield and Pierce Purcell Shield, a player
shall have, in the calendar year prior to the event, returned
a minimum of four returns in qualifying competitions
(Supplementary Scores are not included) all of which
must be recorded on the handicap records of the player’s
home club on or before 31st December in the calendar
    year prior to the event."

And under Junior Cup specific conditions it says "5. Handicap Qualification: No player shall be eligible to compete
in this Tournament who was not in possession of a CONGU
Handicap in the preceding calendar year.
No player shall be eligible to compete in this Tournament whose
playing handicap was less than five during the preceding
    calendar year."

...but no such rule is present under SC or BS specific conditions.

From my reading, a guy who had no handicap last year, but has one this year and is a member of a club, can play in both SC and BS. Obviously we're talking about a guy who was of a high standard prior to a break from golf.

    Thoughts?

i think the four card rule is to stop protection of handicap but this isnt relevant to barton/senior cup eligibility, as you say. either that or they take it forgranted that anyone whos being picked for those teams has to be playing somewhat regularly...

I played Barton Shield last weekend. We entered a team even though we have only 1 guy off 2 and then a couple of 4's and 5's. Of course the 2 handicapper wasn't able to make it so we went with 2x4's and 2x5's
Looking at the Leinster results on gui.ie it seems the best score was 153.
The best in Courtown was 155 (+13)
We only organised the Saturday with no thoughts of having to go back on Sunday because we assumed the scores would be much lower (we had 160, 77+83 and came in 5th).
Do these scores not seem pretty weak considering the calibre of golfer... clubs with internationals and guys off plus handicaps etc... bigger clubs with more of a panel to choose from. I see a couple of 180's up there which is 2 x 90... shocking for that level, no?

    Yeah seems ridiculously high.
Will be interesting to see the scores at Woodbrook with Newlands, Grange and Castle.

scores were very high in the heritage as well. difficult format to play and for many it was the first time this competition had a strokplay element at all, used to be straight match play, so the mindset was different. Shots add up very quickly once you get on the bogeey train :o needless to say, we didn't qualify:rolleyes:

The strokes qualifier in these events, though a necessity, really changes the nature of the competition.
That said, at this level you should be able to perform in any format...

Agreed. The clubs with ample very low guys have been complaining for years about other clubs throwing in teams with 7s and 8s and how pointless these matches were. Now they don't have to play anyone who hasn't played well to be there.

    Yet still they complain...
