    Hi

this is going to seem lame i know, but i want to get fit and ive decided id like to give jogging/running a try, cos i think id actually enjoy it. Walking never seems that energetic an exercise so i dont feel like im getting anywhere when i do it. My main aim is to lose some weight, tone up and get fit and generally have more energy.
Im just wondering does anyone know of places to jog in waterford (city preferably cos i dont have a car unfortunately) that are relatively quiet. Im loathe to go jogging on the streets cos id feel so embarrassed passing people cos id be huffing and puffing and red in the face - i would be very self-conscious :o and id be doubly mortified if i ran into someone i knew.
    any ideas?
    thanks

What about the park? We used to do it every day and a lap of it is around 1km. People of all types jog and walk around it.

You could try the track at the RSC? Just pay a couple of euro and run...

Don't worry about running the streets. Thousands do it every day in Waterford. The thing about the running fraternity is that every other runner is respected. We all have to start somewhere, and if you can exorcise your demons immediately, you'll be all the better for it. So what if you're huffing and puffing? That's a sign that you're putting the effort in, and remember, no-one but you knows how far you've run at that stage. As far as the people you meet are concerned, you may have already covered 5 miles!

Take it from me, you'll enjoy it a lot more on the street than running loops of the park. There's more variation and distraction, and there's less tendency to stop. If you run loops, you just pass a point each time where you want to stop. If you run a route, you have to keep going if you want to get home.

Enjoy it...and welcome to the club!

Is the RSC open to the public at all times? Say I wanted to go for a run after work (around 6p.m.) would this be an option?

    How much is it?

Thanks in advance and sorry if I'm hijacking the thread

I've often been down there at 6-ish and had no problems. As already mentioned, it's €3.50 to run there. To be on the safe side, check www.waterfordac.com to see when they train at the track. All other times should be ok for you...

Would you consider joining a club? Most clubs welcome beginners and running with other people is great for encouragement and much more enjoyable.

As part of the club, you'll get to use the facilities (RSC in the case of Waterford AC) and join in a group for longer runs.

    Hi,

If you're taking up rinning, just mind your knees. They will take a hammering. A less impact alternative is cycling. The Sportif Waterford Cycling Club that has been set up recently cater for all types of cyclists. Loads of friendly people to help out if you have questions or queries on anything cycling. :D Best of luck.

thanks everyone for the replies. Some good ideas there.
Im going to start with the park i think, to build up some confidence before i hit the streets:D
The beach sounds good too cos that would be a lot gentler on the knees

Have to agree with Gscully, the track is the place to start. Monday night there are all different levels on the track, from the almost walkers to the experienced. You just turn up and do what you are able to. I would suggest that in the summer time you stay off the streets as you will be confined to them in the dark winter months. Everyone has to start somewhere so everyone fits in. Going to the track helps you meet people who are no better than you and just think most of the people there had to start some time, somewhere. The surface of teh track also helps as it is very spongy and will not damage the joints like on the roads. As you progress you can move onto the next group but look at improvements as long term and plan the 2 miles in the winter league in November as your goal. That also takes place from the track at the RSC. There are also groups running from the car park of te RSC on Tue and Thur nights all year so there is lots for you to aim for. Start at the track on Mon Night, turn up with your €2 and get started, you wont regret it.
