The meaning of 'Push'

I've seen the word 'push' written beside some apps on the store, and saw mention of push a few times. I'm not quite clear on what it is - does it mean your iPhone automatically connects to wifi or 3G and downloads without you asking? (if u have the push function turned on)

It means if you want to push data to your iPhone from a server, eg emails etc

Push Notification is a new feature in the iPhone OS 3.0 that allows you to, drum rolls please, receive notifications on your iPhone regardless of the fact that the app the notification refers to is not currently running. Perhaps an actual example would be welcomed in order to understand this better: you talk to your friends via an IM (instant messaging) client and then you turn off that IM client; when someone on your list contacts you, a message is displayed on your iPhone’s screen.

Don't have an iPhone yet but afaik it shouldn't do because apple are responsible for the push servers so all you need from your carrier is a data connection.
