I saw the interview Duval did with SKY after the presentation. A genuine nice guy and its good to have him back.

  • Subscribers Posts: 4,419 ✭✭✭PhilipMarlowe

I didn't see the interview today but in most interviews I've seen he comes across as guy you'd really like to know. It was mentioned in the commentary that his peers love to play golf with him too.
I though he showed some character to bounce back this week, not from the depths that he had been in but like the way after a shaky start to round 2 he dug in and recovered. Same today after that bit of bad luck on the par 3 being buried under the lip in the bunker...
Remember he hasn't totally been in the abyss either. Shot the equal lowest round of the week at the US Open in 06 I think (winged foot?). And was in the mix at The Open last year too after a couple of rounds. Not to mention the Memorial this year before he got hexed here.

    Interview on usopen.com
    Q. What was this week like?

DAVID DUVAL: Long. Very long week. Very tiring week: Start, stop, up at 5:00 every day, walking through wet, heavy, long golf course. So tiring mentally and physically.

    Q. You got yourself back into a position this day, after a down year, what's it meant to be out there be a part of the U.S. Open theater again?

DAVID DUVAL: It's what I want. It may be arrogance, but it's where I feel like I belong. And I was glad to come up here and hit the golf ball and control myself like I've been saying I've been doing, and how I've been talking about how I know I'm playing a lot better than my results have been showing.

I stand before you certainly happy with how I played, but extremely disappointed in the outcome. I had no question in my mind I was going to win the golf tournament today.

    Q. After the triple, did you think, okay, I'm out of it or did you think, you know, this is sort of my career here, I know how to come back?

DAVID DUVAL: I don't quit. And I figured I had a par‑5 right there that I could maybe pick up two shots, definitely needed to pick up one.

And funny enough, I hit a really good shot it came off short and I had an awkward stance again.

Certainly couldn't equate it to being buried under the lip of a bunker, I was like, man, here we go again. I managed to get it up‑and‑down.

And then I caught a couple ‑‑ caught an awful mud ball over on 7 hit a beautiful drive on the fairway and the ball hooked 60 yards. So that hurt me a little.

But, you know, again, just keep moving forward and try to hit a quality shot on the next one and you never know when you're going to make a 50‑footer, and lo and behold, I made one on the next hole, 60 foot, up on 8.

So at that point I knew that somewhere in the neighborhood of 3‑, 4‑under was going to be a really good score. And that's what I was trying to do.

    Q. You said the other day while you can draw upon things when things are going well for you but you can also draw upon the bad times now. And in that context, do you have a greater appreciation for being in this position now than you did, say, 10 years ago, 11 years ago?

DAVID DUVAL: Well, to me I don't know exactly how to answer if it's a greater appreciation, if it's simply recognize it more, which may fall into the category of being a great appreciation. I don't know exactly what to say about that.

I may have taken it a little bit for granted years ago. And having to work quite hard over the course of years; I guess the best way to put it, maybe, is I probably had a lot more fun out there in the heat of it, especially over there on the theater of 15 through 17, 18, than I've had on a golf course in a long time.

I was in the middle of the golf tournament trying to make birdies and I was just having a blast. So that probably qualifies as greater appreciation.

Again, I look back at what comes first, confidence or success. And I was gaining confidence while I was having little success. And it's very difficult to sit here and say second place is a failure. It is very much a success. It's not quite the success I had looked forward to this week and had hoped for, and in some way expected. But success, nonetheless. And therefore, even more confident. Even more confident in what I'm doing. So affirmation, possibly, we could equate it that way.

    Q. How do you change your summer with the British and PGA; when do you expect to head back?

DAVID DUVAL: I'm headed back to Denver this afternoon. And I haven't been home in three weeks. I'm ready.

It doesn't change anything. I'll be playing at the John Deere the week before The Open Championship and, then I'll fly over for The Open Championship, and honestly after that, I have to look at the schedule. I don't know what goes on after that.

I'm assuming by you asking me that question, it certainly crossed my mind, but I'm assuming I get into the PGA now. I don't know either.

So, again, that's a week I hadn't had on my schedule. Had planned on getting there but hadn't done it. I don't know if I'm in or not. I don't know what exactly this does.

    Q. How do you feel about Turnberry; have you played there?

    DAVID DUVAL: Never have.

    Q. Take us through 15 and 16.

DAVID DUVAL: 15, you could probably see on the television, actually I hit my drive and picked up my tee. I thought I piped it. Some gusts kind of knocked it over. And I was just hoping to have a reasonable lie and I got up there and had that. And hit the golf shot the next shot exactly where I was aiming. Left kind of up, left‑center of the green where the slope is.

It came off just perfect. And I had maybe 14 feet for birdie, something like that. It broke about, you know, 10 or 12 inches to the right.

And then on 16 I just piped it and hit an 8‑iron to about, oh, 10 feet and had a straight downhill putt that I rolled in.

    Q. What did you hit on 7?

DAVID DUVAL: I was trying to hit a low 4‑wood.

Delighted to see him do so well. He showed some real character today and holed some very good putts.

Hopefully he'll go on from this.

I'd love to see him in the next Ryder Cup.

wasn't his brother very sick as a child and he gave him bone marrow for a transplant......the guy is a decent skin and it is good he is back..hopefully he can drive on from here....showed huge resilience to come back from a triple bogey early in his round to contend...if the putt on seventeen had dropped and not lipped out I think he would have won don't think glover would have finished 4 under if he only had a one shot cushion

Delighted to see him back, a true gentleman and a great player to boot.

Really thought he was going to do it coming down the stretch to be honest. Had he hit the green on 17 it may have been a different story.

Hope this is the start of better things for him.

To be honest, the final hole for Glover and the win was a slight anti climax for me for what was one fo the most enjoyable tournaments I have watched in a very long time.

Agree with the anti-climax part of it. It even seemed like one to him and the rest of the crowd. While he was taking the par putt there were drives of people just walking by not caring.

DD's lip out and the fact that he nearly holed the chip on 17 had me on the edge of my seat. Also Barnes's putt looked cast iron.

I agree, Barnes was ignored, despited the fact that he was well in the mix. Thought he showed a bit of class on the back nine considering the meltdown he had on the opening 9.

Thought a playoff would have been a fitting end to the tournament.

Absolutely brilliant to see Duval back, he was always my favourite golfer... Best swing in the game in my opinion, I'm not sure if there is many finer!

Hopefully he is back to stay, its a much better game with him on the leaderboard...

You can not be serious man!

Its a series of flaws that can work out well for him. But its a long way from orthodox, and you couldnt advocate copying it. The long 'slump' shows what a fine line his swing threads between brilliant and not-at-the-races.

Still, had expected him to be a serious challenger through the Tiger years, and very glad to see him get it back somewhat.

That slump was not due to his swing, it was due to other reasons, need I remind you that he (as well as Vijay) are the only two to have held the world number one slot while Tiger has been on the scene. Thats shows the class of the man.

Any yeah sure his swing isn't "perfect" like everyone else playing the game, the club is laid off at the top, he doesn't look at the ball through impact... But watch his tempo, the single most important thing in the golf swing! His is flawless, its effortless. This is far more important than "positions"!

give it up for the guy who won over 4 days instead of all this peoples champion/crowd favourite vomit
what is it with all the people shouting for kenny perry after the masters( a bad advertisment for golf....never travelling to the open or any major where the course didn't suit...a choker) and duval now a guy who was at the top and slipped(unlucky but 100's of worse bad luck stories out there)

what do you want, jd to come 2nd at the open??
so we can all drone on,
sure god love us only for his drink drug and gambling habits he'd be a great golfer

Duval was never the peoples champion or crowd favourite... but he's one of the few guys who actually thinks about and answers interview questions honestly and interestingly. (Geoff Ogilvy is another).

Fair play to Lucas Glover but Duval's is a more interesting story hence the thread saying as much.

    disagree there
the crowd were overwhelmingly pro phil and duval

many others answer well generally see better interviews on euro tour

fisher, mickleson, levet, poulter and boo(always good value),mc dowell, harrington(usually) and mc ilroy all interviewed well, more often the europeans normally answer well coz generally the sky guys ask better questions than the so far up there own a** yank interviewers...imo

Sorry sham but up until he dropped off the map it pretty much was, his results when he was world number one pretty much speak for themselves. And anyway the best swings in the world are the un-orthodox ones as these are the ones that normally hold up under pressure which is what its all about.. So go off and practise yours on front of a mirror!!

And fair play to Lucas Glover, a fully deserving winner and a pity there wasn't more of an atmosphere for him afterwards..

Fair enough on Levet and Boo but the others just give standard golf cliche answers. The whole "one shot at a time", "never give up", "the fans are great" rubbish. Someone on a thread here said Mcilroy sounded like an oul one on his blog. Nothing original. While I'm a Tiger fan I'd still say he's by far the worst offender on this. He's an absolute disciplined master at saying nothing in interviews.

Let's hope we see more of Duval...

I have to agree about Duval’s swing. It may not be orthodox, but it’s a thing of beauty.
He had such a bad break at the 3rd yesterday to get that lie in a bunker and two years ago he probably would have collapsed and shot 80. Shows how far he’s come. He’s still only 37, let’s hope this comeback’s for good. He showed he’s still got the game for majors. I wouldn’t bet against him winning one or more.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,848 ✭✭✭soundsham

it's about now he was off the map due to many things including that swing,he was ranked 750ish before yesterday, he had a good tournament wow ! (it happens like it did for lowry) but now they both need to drive on

no need to be getting carried away with yourself........guess you were shouting go rocco last year in your wrap-around specs & the 2001 open posters above your bed !!

i hope he does well seems like a nice guy but he lost

Did u catch him in bed with your sister or what?

In that case everyone apart from Glover sucks and we cant talk about them?
Remember this is the DD thread, not the US Open thread.

I happen to agree that Duval has a lovely swing to watch, its natural, and like so many of the natural swings its still there under pressure. The robotic swings go pear shaped when things go bad. Tiger doesnt have an othodox swing, no body else swings like him.

It can only be good for the game to have someone of that quality back playing well.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,601 ✭✭✭Marshy

The fact Duval didnt win is irrelevant, he performed under pressure and with a bit more luck he may have won.

People are just happy for him because he suffered such a decline in form and I think its always admirable when a player can come back from such lows.

    no bedroom problems here kid
but while your cuddling up to spudmonkey there
read my posts, i know its the dd thread doh!!
its the fact that "a has been" is back has a few of ye all orgasmic.....lucky he didn't win it would have been fairly messy in that sleeping bag with spud
the point is glover was barely appreciated by the crowd after winning and the yap here seems like ye would have prefered duval to win too, no problem with that either whatever floats your boats.

Duval's return to form added to a great tournament. It's the second best comeback of the year. A good bit behind Monty's return to form to win the Open Championship at Turnberry. No laughing at the back please.

    a) he is not a has been.
    b) the fact that the crowd could care less that Glover won has zero to do with this thread
    b) Im sure there are lots of different people who would have preferred lots of other players to win. This thread is not about that. Its about being happy that DD is returning to the top.

I really dont see what your issue with DD is, but whats even more bizarre is the issue you are having with this thread.

You’re talking like this is some Driving range pro, who just happened to have a good week. The guy was the best in the world for a couple of years, and he’s one of the best players I’ve ever seen play the game. For a variety of reasons he’s been in the wilderness for years. But he can’t be compared to Lowry in any way.
