i have started playing a few open competitions recently with a view of getting a few .1's back on my handicap. checking golfnet recently I 'm not seeing the adjustments to my handicap. Anyone know how the system works. Does the host club update golfnet after the competition or have I to wait for my home club handicap secretary to adjust the handicap??

Why do you want a few point 1's back? Hopefully its not for a few tacky trophies!

Ya it might take a while for them to come through..

If it's a respectable handicap you're looking for then going out playing for as you call it "to get .1's back" is not the way to go about it.
You can ask your handicap sec to do a review of your handicap and it's not uncommon for your current handicapp to be adjusted up or down.

If you have been playing off 9 for the last 26 years then thats your handicap. Just keep on playing, and if it needs adjustment the system will do it. If you have been injured or seriously ill with ongoing consequences, then you can ask to have your handicap reviewed to reflect a changed capability.
If not, your question suggests (and not trying to provoke here, but it just reads that way) planned banditry.

With electronic sign in and score entry it should be easy for handicaps to be up to date. It's not though. It's almost 4 weeks since i played a comp and the scores still haven't 'come through'. Another from 3 weeks only came on today.

All it means is that i've had to play off the wrong handicap for the past 2 weeks. Bring back the old pen and paper.

I still haven't got my .1 back for Headfort and am due another from last w.end so I think I am back up to 7..

Short game so bad I am going to do well to still be in singles by the end of the season

Bad form, and you as a golfer of 26 years experience should know better.

You are actively seeking to play bad golf and get .1's, this in my eyes is nothing short of banditry.

Play the game and enjoy it, and your handicap will be adjusted according to how you play.

don't get me wrong. I've only played about 4 competitions in last 11 years. have been totally out of the loop last few years. to be honest, not even sure how the handicap system works now. the reason for the thread is purely to find out what is happening in 2009 and how do i regain a competitive edge to my game!

If you haven't played competitions then I would have expected your handicap to lapse. You should then be able to hand in 3 cards and get a new one.
Speak to your handicap secretary. If you hand in 3 cards with a letter explaining that you haven't a current true handicap then you might get allocated a new fair one (based on your 3 cards and any other information like your past handicap) but you'd really need to chat about this first.

Just an observation on this, if its all sign in on PC's these days, how can you play off your 'correct' handicap as some postings say "its the players responsibility" etc, if you sign your card for a different score than whats on the 'computer', how does that work, DQ? Surely comp Sec doesn't go with the assumption 'aaah this guy has played some open comps and handicap hasn't been adjusted yet to reflect'

The computerised system makes an awful lot of sense, why doesn't the Sec. just set a scheduled task to do what ever uploading should be done???

It does get messy around the .4 and .5 territory alright...
When you sign in (to an away comp) you get the opportunity to correct what is on the computer but of course even though you may have a few .1's waiting to come back to you, you have to play off the lower handicap until whoever does whatever computer routine to sort you out. You'd imagine that it would be a pretty automatic thing without any need for delay...
Once the competition is closed and the results are published, why is there a need for any delay? Surely in the modern internet era, the central handicap database (golfnet) could be more up to date.

    p.s. Graeme, category 2 much? :D

Absolutely. I thought the computer sign in was great when i first moved over. Now, i long for the pen and paper again. You're dead right though, somewhere in the system, something just ain't working the way it should/could.
