Cannot install Adobe Flash Player

I would really appreciate any help anyone can give me with this problem.

I have a Dell Dimension Desktop, bought in January 2007 (no longer under warranty) which up until a couple of months ago used to have no problems. It is protected by McAfee. It is hard to recall what went wrong first but the scenario we are left with now is that we cannot install Adobe Flash Player and obviously this is annoying as it is used everywhere from News sites to YouTube!

When the pc was running well we did have Adobe flash player installed but it "disappeared" as part of the problem and I have not been able to get it back. I tried downloading Flash Player 9 in case the new one was the problem but that wouldnt work either.

Also I get a message coming up when I have logged onto windows that says: "Error loading C:WINDOWS\system 32\qctudbdn.dll".

I have thoroughly investigated the Adobe troubleshooter to no avail, cannot find anything on Dell website either. The error code I get when trying to install Adobe Flash Player "Failed to install. For troubleshooting tips see.....error code tn_19166"

Is there any alternative but to go back to factory settings?

    Thanks all.
    Lucy

Have you typed "error code tn_19166" into Google?
Theres a fair few topics on that particular issue in google.

Make sure you are running the most recent windows updates (go to www.windowsupdate.com) Might be worth installing internet explorer 8.0 also-can be done through windowsupdate)
Make sure your antivirus is enabled and up to date. (Do a full system scan)

I doubt anything on the Dell site would help for this one. It appears to be a fully software based issue.

If the problem is with that single .dll file you could copy that file from a mates machine and drop it into your own machine and overwrite your one.

    did you get it working

Antivirus is up to date, so is windows updates, and full system scan done. Will try the copying from another pc - just tried looking for the dll file on the laptop, but that runs Vista and the search couldnt find the exact same file.

Searched on Google and tried a couple of the ideas on there, including a Fix It from Microsoft about security, but still no joy yet!

I have a feeling that maybe installing IE 8 was when our problems started . Strangely though, I was "not allowed" to system restore prior to April 4th so was never able to get back to our fully working system.

Had a problem with installing the latest verison of flash player recently.

Downloaded some uninstall utility form the adobe site and then reinstalled the latest flash player version - all worked after that.

I tried this (although I was pretty certain we had no remnants of old Flash Players on the pc), and unfortunately it didnt work either. Thanks for the suggestion though.

If it's a problem with Internet Explorer, I always find that booting to Safe Mode and running the anti-spyware programes "SDFix" and "ComboFix" are very good at restoring to IE default settings.

Just another suggestion to try if you've already pulled your hair out trying thing else..

[ I googled the filename 'qctudbdn.dll' and your thread was the only match that came up, which makes me thing that maybe a malicious spyware program is the root of the problem? ]

Thank you all very much for your help, but I am afraid none of these options have worked. I also tried installing and running CCleaner which was recommended on another thread, and this also didnt help (though did seem a very efficient Cleaner!).

I could not find the missing dll file on my mate's XP pc either.

Go to start - Run - and enter this script.( You can copy and paste )regsvr32 /u jscript.dll
    Then click ok

Do this same again but this time enter :
    regsvr32 jscript.dll
    Then click ok

Then try to install Adobe Flash player

I have just tried this now, but still wont install. Both these scripts came up as "successful" on the second attempt, but unfortunately still wont install the flash player. Thanks anyway

have you tried any Registry cleaning utilities? I often use:

    TuneUp Utilities 2009
    http://www.tune-up.com/download/

    and

    RegScrubXP 3.25

I had a problem installing flash player 10 , kept installing 9.0.2 instead...

had to not install the suggested configuration (windows xp , IE ) and instead select "different" and then select "windows xp" and then "IE". the installation went ok after that.

Thanks for that. The tune-up one has got rid of my WINDOWS\system32 error on startup but still no Adobe! Will try the other when I get a chance.
