I was at the checkout & noticed that a single Extra pack is 41c, yet a pack of 5 is priced at €2.06. This means it's cheaper to buy 5 single packs. I know it's only a difference of 1 cent but it's the principle.

Principles are one thing, but a thread over one cent?

I would hate to see you with a serious problem.

I don't see anything wrong here, i.e. no "principle". The moral of the story is to not assume anything, single or small packets are very often cheaper, and often a lot more than 1cent.

Even in the same shop you have to "shop around", e.g. in tesco 4 packs of coke are often more expensive than twin or 3 packs. In atlantic homecare once I saw phosphoric acid on sale in 3 different sections, different brands, same strength acid and difference was more than double.

The principle here is that when you buy in bulk you should get a discount. As for your acid example, I think it's different brands & hence different price.

in fairness OP multipack extra chewing gum costs the same in my local tesco (€2.06) but my local Spar charges 75c a pack (or if i go up the road in IFSC its 85c)

so while you arent getting a deal that way i am...(or at least not as ripped off as coulda been)

I know people might think they should and so presume they will, and shops can take advantage of this. More often than not family size tins of beans or peas or curry sauce etc are more expensive per gram than smaller tins/jars.

My point is presume nothing, work it out, there is no ripoff, people are free to buy what they want. The 5 pack could have costed more to produce due to the extra packaging.

The other thing to watch out for is portion sizes, many mulitpack bars are now around 45g while the single ones are 55-65g.

Another example of this sort of thing is in Currys/Dixons whatever they are called now, with their USB drives.
They have one particular make of drive, a 4GB one I believe for 22 euro.
Or you can take them up on their special offer of a two pack, of the exact same drive, for 49.50!!!

When I asked one of the dopey eyed sales assistants about it, she said it was because of the VAT difference!

What vat regime are they using where the vat on the same item is different depending on the quantity in the pack?

at least you didnt pay the prices in waterpark stores.. Extortionate. Of course i understand why.. But that doesnt make buying bread and milk any cheaper on the way home
