which appilcations/programs are you talking about. I would expect that they are configurable......if it's the likes on MSN Messanger, just go to Options and set it to not start on startup, this would be the same the majority of apps.

    Click:

    "Start"
    "Run..."

Type "msconfig" in the "Open" field

    Click "OK"

    System Configuration Utility will open.

    Click on the "Startup" tab.

Here you will have a list of programs / services that start when XP starts.

They all have a checkbox next to them. Uncheck ones that you do not want starting. Check online for ones you are not sure about before unchecking one, in case it's important for your system that it starts on XP load.

Click "Apply" and then "OK" button will change to "Close". Click "Close".

It will then ask you if you want to "Restart Now" or "Restart Later" as a restart is needed for changes to effect. You can leave it until later. When you do a restart, you will get a message telling you that you are "using personal start up preferences" or some message like that. It will have a check box so that you will not have to see it everytime you start up. Check it and click "OK" if you do not want to see it everytime you start XP.
