Assault on Black Reach set then. Full 5th edition rules, plus a decent bunch of minis.

Indeed, Black Reach is a good priced set. You get templates for large/small blast and the flame template aswell. A nice start if you want to go with either marines or orks, have to get the codex's seperatly though, or if you just wanted one side there should be plenty of black reach mini's floating around ebay.

Add a battleforce (around 50 euro) set to either side and you'd have a fairly decent small army.

For getting back into having a few games I recommend getting your ass into one of the game shops or clubs near you and talking to a few of your potential opponents.

What did you pla when you were into 40K perviously?

See that's a whole different set of questions and answers.

    :D

Chaos is very different these days. A lot of the old school chaos players have abandoned the codex in disgust for having lost the hook that drew them to the army.

Best advice is to get into a game store and have a look at the figures and pick one or 2 armies that appeal to you for the figures.

Next step is figuring out if you'll actually enjoy playing them and what's good in the list. There are whole forums on the net on that but if you've got a short list of armies that you kinda like we can give you the high level "good/bad/ugly" here

Do you like shooty armies, CC armies or a mix? How about fluff? Like or dislike? Its all a factor. Tho I agree with Murph, best is to find models you like the look of.
It also depends whether you're more of a gamer than a painter or vice versa.
Tau for example have both fleshy creatures and lots of armour so thats good for the painting. Problem is they have an old codex so they are less competitive than armies like the Space Marines (every six months those boys get a new one) or the Guard who also just got a new codex.
Orks again are very nice for painting and modelling and are lovely to game with.
Just two examples to be going on with.
