Getting an iPhone - switching from 3

Just looking for a little advice. As the title suggest, I will be getting an iPhone, hopefully a 3GS on Friday.

At present, I am on 3 billpay. But my contract is long since expired, and is just on a month by month rollover. The bill to date on my plan is the 6th of every month.

Basically, do I need to ring up 3 and go through the whole cancellation process. Or will O2 look after that for me as part of the porting process?

Has anyone had any experience in such switch-overs?

With Meteor, I had to give them 30 days notice first, then I was free to port (which I will be doing Friday, gave them notice in writing over a month ago).

I'd say you need to give them the 30 days notice before you can get your iPhone.

    Balls.

I had a feeling about that 30 days notice thing, but assumed I could just pay that month, but still port (I know its a bit wasteful) and lose whatever mins/txts are coming to me.

So effectively, if I want to keep my number, I will be forced to wait nearly a month after the 3GS is released.

You don't have to wait. Do as you said. Just port and you will lose your month you paid in advance.

So if I ring 3 tomorrow and give them my notice, there shouldn't be any problems with O2 porting on Friday? Will I need to mention it to O2 that I am in the middle of a cancellation period?

I know all of this sounds retarded, but from my experiences in the past mobile/tv/broadband companies can really mess you around when trying to cancel a contract.

TBH, it was very straight forward for me - I sent them a letter saying I was giving them the 30 days notice, they said fine, and changed me over to pre-pay last week.

You could do that, or you could probably pay the 30-days notice to get out of it. It's probably better if you ring them to clarify.

No, you are not wrong. I was in the same boat, however, just after Christmas, I signed up for Meteor's 30-day thingy (don't recall which one). To get out of that, I had to give them 30 days notice. Once you are out of contract, you can leave when you want.

You don't have to give 30 days notice, as such, with that. You only have to give 30 days notice if you are going back to Meteor PayG. If you are switching operator, you can just switch but you will be charged for the next 30 days, which for the most part isn't an issue as most (if not all) the operators bill in advance so you've already paid your next 30 days.
