Well as you know water is the most essential substance in our body. However, the idea that drinking lot's of water (typically known by the 8 glasses a day myth) gives extraordinary health benefits is subject to debate.

I believe that if you have a healthy diet and are of good health i.e good kidney function etc there is no need to go out of your way to drink water to an excess or buy into this "challenge". Obviously people who may confess to a poor diet or people who work out vigorously or people living in an area of hot climate, should be conscious of their water intake.

Drinking fluids as outlined in the Volvic challenge will not do you any harm and can only have a positive effect in the sense you are definitely drinking enough water every day. However there is little or no scientific evidence to suggest there is extraordinary health benefits (or lack of) to drinking lot's of water.

Is this all PR where Volvic is concerned? Definitely

There are some very interesting talks those who are interested should look at by Professor Tim Noakes, Sports medicine expert physiologist from south africa

His belief is we have been conned by the sports drinks industry into believing we need to be super hydrated all the time.

He has a very good example of an african bushman who chases a gazelle over hours (7 or 8) and eventually catches it

In conversation he asks him about fluid replacement over the hunt and the guy explains that he doesnt take ANY. he considers it dead weight that he would have to carry for the run and so doesnt drink during it

Maybe he has some special adaptation but the talks were fascinating

Overall drinking water is essential but you can overdo it as well and this looks like a slick marketing ploy to sell a product and will probably boost sales.

we have taps in almost all houses with safe drinking water (few exception areas) so do we need to buy water?

yes - adequate hydration is important, but I've not seen anything concrete on the virtues of drinking gallons and gallons of fluids each day.

When you think about it, the demographic that Volvic is targetting with this campaign, in all likelihood don't drink enough fluids or stay adequately hydrated. So thus, if they see it out, and drink the stuff, after the 14 days, they feel better.........mainly because they'll be doing what they should have been doing all along! With tap water too.

Your confusing adequate hydration with drinking water. You can be adequately hydrated and never drink water. We need 3 litres of water a day and can easily get this from food without ever drinking a glass of water. The way this ad works is to get volvic into people minds (which, as it is imported should be avaoided). Most people will never do the "14 day challange". The vast majority of those who do try it will never stick to it or will never complete it however they will associate volvic water with feeling better because they saw it on the ads.

Drinking too much water is not good for you and can be dangerous - upsets the electrolyte balance. Sometimes seen in people with schizophrenia - psychogenic polydipsia.

VOLVIC is a brand of bottled water

The challenge is an advertising gimmick where they are challenging people to drink 3 or 4 bottles a day and see how they feel afterwards

Do some people get a placebo water? Just to add a bit of scientific rigor to the process.:P

No the control is you're not allowed drink any water for 3-4 days. Apparently, the trials have shown very surprising results!

I bought in to the volvic myth for a long time. I thought it kind of "purified" you or some rubbish. There's definitely a difference in taste between straight from the tap-water and a bottled water. You can also refrigerate a bottle - I prefer cold water. There's a water cooler thing in teh fridge here so I usually fill that up and drink a pint glass in the morning because I hate the taste and feeling I get in my stomach and mouth/tongue/throat.

Bottled water when you're out isn't a bad thing cause it'll keep you hydrated and you're not consuming calories. The downside is you'll have to pee more. But after years of being hooked into 2 two litre bottles of volvic a day I do now lol at overweight people clutching on to their ubiquitous water bottle.

    /hypocrisy/ is the greatest luxury
