I came across the Honda Insight on sale in a local shopping mall on Saturday - about €18,000 French price. 101 g/km CO2. €2,000 tax rebate French eco bonus...

At the other end of the scale, Mercedes-Benz has an S400 Hybrid (220 kW gasoline engine) 186g/km CO2, 0-100 km/h in 7,2 sec, average consumption 8,2 l/100km*. The price (Italian magazine) 94,440 €.

* I subsequently came across a Merc advert for the S400H which showed a combined fuel consumption of 8,2 which is more realistic. But not as good as the Merc C250D Prime Edition Blue Efficiency which does 0-100km/h in 7 secs and delivers a fuel consumption of just 5,2 l/100km with 138 g/km CO2!!!

Read "Zoom, race to fuel the car of the future", it will say that the age of the internal combustion engine is coming to an end. Hybrid, flex fuel and hydrogen powered cars will all be the norm in 20 years time.

Prices will remain high at this, the infancy of alternative fuel cars. To speed up the transition away from oil, companies should work together to mass produce these cars so that the price will come down and remain feesible to but one.
