Subject says it all really guys; can't seem to figure out the right combination of search terms to see if it's been answered before.

Basically, if someone has completed their 18 month contract with O2 will they unlock the iPhone for them?

I have it unlocked using yellowsn0w but I'd prefer it to be "properly" unlocked so I can stop worrying about basebands and having to wait longer than everyone else for software updates, etc.

I always thought they were obliged to unlock it for you once your contract runs out. Im buying my first iPhone next week and i for one would not liked to be tied to 02 after the 18 months.

Has anyone wrote to comreg etc? Or whoever deals in these matters.

The standard O2 line on this is that they are the "exclusive" carriers of the iPhone in Ireland. While that continues to be the case, there won't be an unlock.

    prove me wrong O2

It will be interesting to see what happens to all the people with 3G phones now who upgrade to 3G are they stuck with a locked 3G?

There has been some discussion of exactly the above on the O2 forum in the past with news of a solution expected when the 3G came out. Nothing as yet.
