I have a big ol heavy Specialized Globe hybrid. I have been cycling for about the past 8-10 weeks. Most nights I do a spin locally between 30 and 60km. My average has always been 20km/h.
Last week I did the Mizen to Malin ride, my bike was weighed down with carrier, panniers and all sorts.

This evening after 4 days off the bike, I went out with the bike back to normal (minus carrier and panniers). I had a great tail wind out and a horrible headwind back. But my average was.......24.2km/h

I must be doin something right.

You most definitely deserve a pat on the back.
    Well done.

Firstly, well done. You no doubt are getting fitter and stronger.

However averages aren't good enough to actually measure how much. Simply there's just way way too many variables (the wind, your physical state, had you eaten, were tyres pumped, did you encounter more/less red lights, other cyclists get in the way / draft off them......).

But having said all that you're getting better so, keep up the good work!

Well done Kstanford, ignore these ignoramuses.:pac:

One of the most rewarding things about cycling is noticing marked improvments... congrats, keep it up:D:D

holy sh1t, this is great craic :D

so anyways, what's a normal average among boardsies?

(get the feeling I'm about to be blown out of the water and should not have asked this question:o)

I think this was asked a while back and the consensus seemed to be that it's impossible to compare because of the variables 7200 mentioned.

That said, I'd like to average about 30k for a 60k flat spin, but for something longer with hills / wind it'd be closer to 20. Thing is, on a windy day, I can pedal harder and go slower. All of that is on a road bike with skinny tyres and so on.

There are more useful measures like heart rate and power - although HR can't really be used to compare between people. I've been using a HR monitor for a few months and found it useful. A power meter is the shangri-la and is comparable but they're prohibitively expensive.

My averages always hover around the 23km/hr mark. I never pay them much attention.
