Hi, My WD Passort 320gb is not reading on any computer as of yesterday. However My PS3 recognizes it with no problem, because it's a godly machine like that.

IS THERE ANY WAY I can transfer non media files/folders (stuff PS3 has no ideas about) from one external HD to another another external HD, VIA the PS3, seeing as it is the only hardware that will read the dodgy HD..

Backup from one HD to another HD Via the PS3, basically?

Simple enough if it can actually read the drive.

Install Yellow dog linux on your internal HDD as the 2nd OS and in yellow dog linux just find any disk imaging program off the internet and problem solved.

Sweet. Is there any other cool stuff I can do on Linux on the Ps3?

Pretty much anything you can do on a PC like install Firefox etc but its a bit capped as it only has 256mb available of ram(Which isn't a problem for linux really) but the real annoyance is the CPU is slightly locked down with 5 of the cores of the 7 available and the other thing is the GPU is completely locked out with a hypervisor which means you can't play any games on linux.

    Everything else is fine though.

It does anything a regular PC does

Word of warning. Well a few.
    • You need Hi Def tv to make linux even remotely usable. If you don't have Hi Def TV, installing will be troublesome. Read the install docs fully.
    • You will lose EVERYTHING on your PS3 when installing Linux [make sure you backup]. This is because you must re-partition and format the drives to proceed.
    • You will need usb keyboard and mouse. The ps3 controller MIGHT work in Linux but I haven't tested it yet.

Edit : No guarantee that your PS3 will read your Ext HDD via Linux.
