Metrification - use of metric system

Was over in Consumer Issues (complaining of course) and wondered about the lack of metrification here. I thought we were supposed to be going metric, with the pint of beer being the only exception. Since the advent of American US coffee shops, all coffees seem to be sold in Fluid Ounces rather than millilitres and rolls - as was pointed out to me - in inches rather than centimetres.

Does anyone know what the exact status is? What can be advertised/sold using ONLY imperial measurements rather than metric?

Or....who will definately know? Isn't there some EU office in Dublin?

I'm actually not sure. I know in the UK they specifically legislated for this.

There are some regulations in relation to the labelling of packaged products - but cafes would get away with ignoring this because it's not a packaged product. Afaik, all items sold by weight must also be weighed/priced in KG. Again, doesn't apply to coffee shops.

This is probably of the most use:

There are rules set out in an SI somewhere.

For pints - the rule is the container must be reusbale, i.e. beer glasses, glass milk bottles, etc.
