I am looking for a Smart Car for my daughter and I have found a couple on the above site. However the phone number associated with an ad doesn't work. IT says it is associated with a particular county but the phone number looks like a northern number. Not being entirely comfortable with purchasing cars, should I be wary. I know you should always be wary when buying over the web.

Might be a scam - they're deliberately posted with phone numbers that don't work. Post up a link to the ad, and we'll have a look.

Thanks I will get the link. I did send them an e-mail and was kind of worried about the response I got.

    SCAM!!!!!!!!!!!!
The cheapest 2005 fortwo on Autotrader uk is £3500 for a lower spec than that.
    Stay well away.
Copy and paste the email to give us a laugh.

Let me guess, the car is in spain or somewhere and he wants you to send the money through his bank in Nigeria??

    Definite scam. Run a mile!

Didn't let it get that far, thankfully... He also called me on the phone, I gave him my number in the e-mail. Very suspicious, told him I had arranged to see one closer to home... although I hadn't

Anyone point me in the direction of a legit place for a Smart, once bitten....

lot more of them in the UK if your willing to travel

I'd be as wary of that as of trying to buy online. I am a traditionalist, I like to buy from some one I know, I have bought all my cars approx 12 (non new) over the years from the same dealer. This dealer obviously doesnt sell smart so I am having to look other places. I did check VRt and it should be under a grand but am still very cautious.

With sterling now not as close as it was to euro, is there still good value in travelling to the uk for something like this, I want to spend around €6,000.

Why don't you have a word with the dealer that you normally deal with.
He'd more than likely be willing to find/import one for you.

When I was in sales, if someone wanted something that we didn't stock, we'd go out and try and find it for them, especially if it was a straight deal.

I'd imagine they'd only be too happy for the business.

very sensible suggestion, I have talked to him as I would need him to maintain it for me anyway. He is very particular about cars that he will maintain, too busy.. Not a mom and pop either, a main dealer....

I will try again, he may be able to get one through the trade, although not many about,.,,,, Thanks for your suggestions...

Well, he can always do the import for you too, and he should be able to put a warranty on it for you. Just deliver it to you with Irish plates on it.

Another option is www.corkmotorcentre.com .they specialise in mercs and smarts

Is that nearly as bad as going abroad, only joking, I'll give them a call... Thank you... They didn't have a normal one, they had a couple of Brabus upgraded ones.

Location of car is stated as Kildare but telephone code suggests Sligo.
