Changing from Private to Public

To make a long story short I've been seeing a consultant neurologist privately for the last year and a half and I can't afford it anymore. Does anyone have an experiance as to what the procedure is for changing to a public one? Do I simply say to him next time I see him that I want to swap or is it a case of going back to my GP and looking for a referall to another... That took years the first time around, wont be too thrilled if I have to wait again...

I know it is no consolation now but it is sometimes faster to see a neurologist publicly than private. Chat to your consultant first. If you have an on-going problem that needs follow-up by a consultant (often follow-up can be done by GP) then it would seem reasonable to simply transfer you to public clinic without too much delay. I would not wait until next appointment as that will end up putting him on the spot. Phone his secretary and explain your situation. Send in a letter if necessary.

Thanks, I'll give his office a ring in that case. When I went for an initial appoinment it was a two week wait private almost two years for public  which is why I went private. I'm going to loose my health insurance in comming months and can't keep up with regular private appointments, which is a shame because he was a fantastic consultant, he really couldn't have done more.
