Could anyone tell me how much that actually is? Would it amount to 20-30 webpages or 5 mins on google maps?

Not sure...I use it a good bit on the iPhone and I've never gone over the 50mb limit. That includes using a bit of maps and surfing a few websites and going on Twitter/Facebook

Hard to quantify as it depends on the websites your viewing. If you were using say boards mobile then it would be quite a few pages, but if you were viewing a web page with lots of images your 50mb could be gone with a few pages

I use it for lots of web browsing - facebook twitter Irish times etc. Don't watch movies online or stream music. I have gmail app checking all day long and use maps ofcasionally - never use more than 3 or 4 mb a day.

Thanks for the replies lads. Is there a way to check how much mb you have used so I dont go over and get huge charges?

if you go to Settings>>Usage there is a cellular data network usage for up and downloads just add these and you get your usage. you will just have to reset these statistics for each time your add on is refreshed.

Might be an app for jailbroken phones but I have never really looked so cant say for sure

If you go to phone and dial *113#, it tells you how much of your allowance you've used today. I'm on O2 PAYG, so I dunno if it works for billpay or other carriars.

Also, I've had my iPhone since October and I've only used 475MB in total!

its *111# on bill pay but its not always available and not reliable as it updates it once a day i think so could be wrong when you actually read it

I've used it 3 times today and it's been different each time. Maybe PAYG is more accurate since if ya exceed the limit, you're screwed with data charges.

hi Minto - do u do much surfing with iPhone?
its Just i'm wondering the exact same thing as OP, will the 50mb be enough ...a bit undecided between PAYG or bill pay, but i think i am a bit happier to stick with PAYG to have some control over my spend.
although will probably go mad the 1st few weeks cos i never had an iPhone before.

I'd do a bit, but not a whole lot. If I'm bored I'll check out a few sites or I'll use the facebook app. I'd also use it a bit to check cinema times, watch youtube and google facts when "debating" with friends, lol. I don't think I've ever hit the 50MB yet. I've hit about 30MB today because my broadband was down at home. That was really heavy usage though.

a euro a day is nearly €400 a year though, that's almost the entire cost of your yearly contract.

Yes and no really. I top up by 40 euro each month. This does me for call, texts and data. I get my unlimited free texts to all networks, a max of 31 euro on data and the remainder on calls. That is around the same price as the lowest iPhone tariff (I think). Over a year, it'll cost me 480 euro, over 18 months which is a typical iPhone contract it comes out at about 720 euro. Add the cost of the iPhone and you have the guts of 1,300 euro. I believe a similar type of deal on bill pay works out at 100 euro a month which over 18 months is 1,800 plus the price of the handset, it's either free or 100 euro, either way it's more expensive and with the PAYG model, if you run out of money or wish to get another phone, you are not tied to a contract.

Now don't get me wrong, I think a euro a day for data is excessive. I'd love them to drop it to 50c a day, but when you look at it as I layed out above, PAYG is cheaper in the long run.

Mild disclaimer, my info on iPhone bill tariffs may be out of date. I think the re-did them a few months ago.

Yeah, I was just gonna say, free texts to any network isn't an option anymore. Texts and the data would end up costing me about €80 a month alone I think.

What do you mean free texts to any network isn't an option any more?

I'm on the O2 experience more free texts to any network for 30 days if you top up by €20

I think you should re-read the new bill tariffs, the €40 a month o2 clear bundle would save you a lot less than the €1800 quoted

Maybe I'm wrong, but it seems only O2 experience plus is available for the iPhone

It's available for all their other phones, but not for the iPhone as far as I can tell.

If you're buying the iPhone on PAYG then you're buying it contract-free so you can change to whatever plan you like.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 375 ✭✭Maldini2706

Seriously? That's interesting, didn't know that. Why don't they tell you that then?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 865 ✭✭✭Purple Gorilla

Because they'd rather keep you on a more profitable tariff :)

    From my iPhone just there:

Thanks, I was going to get an unlocked one from Belgium or Italy, might just get a PAYG one now though.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 865 ✭✭✭Purple Gorilla

    It's still locked to O2

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 375 ✭✭Maldini2706

Yeah I know, I was just going to get an unlocked one so I could go on 3 or one of the cheaper O2 price plans. Don't think there's any need now though. So can you just switch to experience more from the phone itself or do you need to contact them?

    Thanks

Wondering this myself. Could I ask them on friday to put me on the experience more tariff or do I have to change it myself after the phone is bought?

    I rang up and asked!

How I balanced up my PAYG or Billpay options was this.
20 euro gives me free calls and texts to O2 (I prefer this over texts to all networks), that 20euro can then be spent on 20 days of data in which I can use Eirtext Pro to text internationally and I am assuming my non o2 numbers seen as it uses my 250 free online texts. That leaves a max of 11 days more data assuming I use data everyday (11 euro) and any calls to other networks (in my case minimal to none).
I reckon my max would be 30-35 a month which will save a monthly cost and go towards the extra cost of the phone but that balances out for me against not being in a contract and being able to take advantage of new price plans for PAYG if they come out.
    :)

I thought the tariff was 1c per 1kb till 99c then the free 50mb then its 2c per 1kb

But it is 2c per 1kb and then the rest. Was it ever 1c per and it has been changed recently, I swear I only saw it recently on their website.

Was just looking at the UK O2 site, and its seems payg customers are getting free unlimited data & wifi for a year and even after a year its only a £10 a month add on for unlimited data!

    http://shop.o2.co.uk/promo/iphoneindex/Pay_And_Go/3G_S

Wish we had something similar here....
