Are there plans to setup park n rides for dublin, it would take a lot of cars out of dublin for commuters.
    Say, one on each main road entering m50, M1, N2, N3, N4, N7 etc.
    Its a no brainer really.

There's a plan for one on the M1 when/if Metro North is built. There was plans for another one (on the N7 possibly) but the council refused planning permission for some reason. Several Luas stations have P&R lots already (Tallaght, Red Cow, Stillorgan and Balally).

Yes, there are long standing plans to intercept cars coming into Dublin on the radial routes and convert to public transport trips.

While Dublin Bus provide services into the city centre on the major routes the infrastructure of Park and Rides ie car parks are mostly being provided or are provided by the RPA and IE.

    R105 (DART/Commuter - Clontarf Road)

    M1 (Metro North - Belinstown)

R108/M50 (Metro North and Metro West - Dardistown)

N2 (Metro West and Luas Finglas - Huntstown & Meakstown)

    N3 (Metro West - Blanchardstown and DART/Commuter - Pace & Phoenox Park)

N4 (Metro West - Quarryvale, Dublin Bus - Liffey Valley Town Centre (Not official) and DART/Commuter - Kilcock & Maynooth)

    N7 (Luas - Redcow & Saggart, Metro West - Newlands and DART/Commuter - Sallins & Naas)

N81 (Metro West - Tallaght East and Dublin Bus - Tallaght Town Centre (Not official))

    N11 (Luas - Stillorgan, Sandyford & Carrickmines and DART/Commuter - Greystones)

Add to that as you wish.

Wrt Clontarf and Maynooth (from experience) the car parks fill quite early, and of course there is now pay parking in Maynooth.

Portmarnock would be (an unofficial) P'N'R for Swords, but again, capacity is a huge issue.

It's actually not a cheap thing to provide Park and Ride.

It costs at least a euro per space per weekday to set up, maintain and operate a park and ride. It costs at least that again to buy or lease the property.

But the OP is essentially right.

McWhirter is correct...however....a trawl back through the Oireachtas Committee on Transport hearings will reveal some interesting official attitudes towards the concept of Park N Ride facilities.

During a long exchange reminiscent of pulling hen`s teeth, the Committee sought to discover what plans if any the Greater Dublin Region Local Authorities had for BUS specific P n R sites......

    The answer......None.

It transpired that ALL P n R sites which were (or Are) under consideration were Rail Based ONLY.

The assemblagé of Senior Planners and Very Powerful People admitted that they had NOT considered any Bus specific facilities nor were they disposed to doing so.. :)

    It`s how we tell `em :)

There is as good as an unofficial park and ride at the N1 beside Whitehall church.

It's a good car park where parking is free with a multitude of buses which stop beside it which will whisk you down the Swords road into the city center in 15 minutes, the car park is only ever one third full.

For park and ride to become attractive you'll have to get rid of all the free on street city center parking first, of which there is still a lot.

Balbriggan is an unoffical park and ride for south Meath due to the train fare structures north of the Delvin.
