a friend is currently in the throes of being made redundant. As part of the package the union has negotiated a pool of money from the employer to share among staff. The company says that this is all they can afford and it should be shared equally based on years service. The union however are insisting that only union members are eligible for the enhanced payment . (my friend isnt a member). The company has challenged this but I suppose at the end of the day as long as they dont have a strike they dont really care how the pot is shared. Surely this is a case for discrimination? anybody any ideas where he can go on this before its too late.......

Pick up the phone to a solicitor who specialises in employment law.

Anything else is a waste of time.

The union will only negotiate on behalf of its members. If they were given an amount then it is to be shared amonst their members which is the way unions work.

Whats the point in unions if you can sit back without paying subs and reap the benifits of it??

You are legally entitled to certain amounts of redundancy after a certain length of service. Im not sure what the levels are but a solicitor will be. (or a quick google im sure ;) )
