im going to service my tractor myself for the first time. i bought it last year for tractor runs. its just a ford 5000. basically do i just leave the engine heat up a small bit and then drain the oil out until it stops coming. while doing this i plan to change the oil filter. is it just take off the old fellow. i have the special gaget for taking it off. is it just turn and put oil around the rubber peace in the new one put oil plug back in and fill up the oil and bobs your uncle. is that correct or am i doing something wrong. i will be using 15w40 oil. anything else that i should change.

I usually fill up the oil filter to almost full aswell before screwing it back on, that way you exactly how much oil is in the engine when you check the level on the dip stick. some of the oil bungs are magnetic aswell to collect filings so maybe give that a clean. Also remember when tightening the oil filter to only hand tighten it. dont use the device you used to take it off to put it back on as you can damage the seal or dent the filter. Thats all i can think of...

Yeah, warm up the engine a little and do it the way you say, if the engine oil filter goes on hole side up, rather than sideways, I'd be inclined to fill it with oil before fitting it. Don't forget the diesel and air filters while you are at it, and let the engine warm up afterwards so you can check for leaks.

How many engine hours do you clock up before doing a service?

Also, what do you do for each service?
Can the Fuel and Air filter be done every second service?

    Cheers.

does it matter if you dont put oil into the filter. the filter goes in horizontal. have another tractor that goes in upside down. does the oil have to be drained out in order to change the oil filter

it all depends on the size of the tractor really, for the big tractors we change at 200 hours because it just burns too much oil after that. For smaller hp you can let it go longer. I usually do the oil and fuel at the same time, as for the air filter, i blow it out with a compressor every 50hours, but depends on the conditions the tractor is workin in really. I think you only need to change it if it is damaged. Im not a mechanic by the way, so i an open to correction on all this!!what is the tractor by the way?

you dont have to fill it with oil, its just that you will get a more accurate reading when you dip the oil after changing it. The oil filter is full normally when you dip it so you have to account for that when you are filling. Just put in a little extra when you are putting the new engine oil in.

does the oil have to be drained from the sump first or does it matter before changing filter

I usually open the bung in the sump first and take the filter off as the sump is draining.
