Bicycle Repair Help

    Hi there,

I had my mountain bike hanging from the ceiling on one of those hoist things which you screw to the ceiling.

Anyway, it fell, to cut a long story short, and the chain snapped and the gear wire (the one going to the gear at the pedals, not the rear wheel) was pulled off.

How standard are chains? In other words can I go to a shop and buy one, grease it, and put it on myself? or can it be easily repaired? It's just one broken link.

Similarly, can a buy a new wire for the gear and attach it? I'm eager to do it all myself to save on the costs of bringing it to a shop.

    Cheers,

    Paul

    Yeah it's no problem.

You can either fix or replace the chain. Find out how many gears are on the back. The number of gears determines the size of the chain. E.g a 7, 8 or 9 speed chain.

To fix the chain you'll need a chainbreaker and a spare link.
To replace it, just buy a chain of the right size.

The gear cable is standard, just a spare inner gear cable is what you want.

Have a look at chainreactioncycles.com to get the bits

    Cheers,

It's 7 gears on the back (and 3 on the front)

Which would be the best / cheapest - replacement or fixing the chain?

Is the replacing of the wire easy to do?

    Thanks again.

Also the gear cable is essentially broken off, gone, i.e. theres nothing at all coming from the left handlebar to the gear at the pedal, not just that the wire is broken.

You're probably best off just getting a replacement link. Saves hassle a new chain might cause. Although, I don't think they do a 7speed spare link. Might just have to get a new chain.

Google around for your particular type of shifter, grip or thumb and you'll find instructions on how to replace the gear cable. It will be straightforward. You'll need a new outer cable so as well. They are standard too. Make sure it's a gear cable outer liner and inner, not a brake one.
