Can an Irish blog become 'important'?

Hey all. I'm just wondering what you all think about the possibility of an independent blog that's socially relevant on a wider scale in Ireland. In the UK we've seen political blogs like Guido Fawkes make and break news while I'd know of a few sports blogs in the US that have also become part of the news agenda over there from time to time. Do you think that any Irish blog could do the same without it having the backing of a radio station/newpaper? As my sig shows I am a blogger (http://almostdailysports.blogspot.com) and I'm noticing that it's hard to get traffic, though I have found that a recent concerted effort has paid off. But is there a glass ceiling that means that all irish blogs are unlikely to register beyond the 'web community'?

    I don't think so.

There have been one or two Irish bloggers in recent years hired by traditional media.

You also have to remember that we're an island of 5 million people at the edge of Europe. Irish writers and bloggers primarily tend to concern themselves with Irish events, which aren't that interesting to the outside world, unless they're concerned with the horrific abuse of children or the spotting of a leprechaun.

As a nation, we do have a horrendously inflated image of our own collective self-importance.

Valid point, but we're a reasonably tech-savvy nation and internet usage is widespread. Ok, there's only five million of us but given that we've a vibrant traditional media industry in print and broadcast, why not blogs too? or am I being overly optimistic?

There doesn't seem to be a credible blog on a par with sluggerotoole on this side of the black pig's dike, which is a pity.

If anyone out there thinks there is then let us know.
