Energy Assessor Question

    Hi,
My first post here. We're looking to self build an A2 house and are looking for professional help to do it. (I'm not a professional in this area but have read up a lot.) However, I'm getting widely varying advice on services offered and quotes.(All SEI assessors.)
Sydthebeat summed up what I’m looking for in a previous thread:
This professional should have the ability to:
    1. use the DEAP software
    2. have the ability to manipulate the data to ensure compliance
    3. have enough construction knowledge to understand what materials work well together to reach the level required, and also how best to use your budget to achieve the levels required.
    4. advise on how to meet minimum regulations
    5. advise on how to upgrade the specification to a rating as required ie A3

Where do I get such a person? Anyone got any recommendations? What's a fair (ballpark) price?
I thought this part would be easy!

Start with the SEI register . Look for assessors in your area . Find 2 or 3 that are architectural technicians . Then ask to see completed works and client references . Then and only then look at €€€€,s

Thanks Sinnerboy. The people/companies I've tried are SEI reg'd but I didn't ask about being architectural technicians - at risk of sounding stupid, why is this important?

AT's are trained anyway , before becoming BER assessors , to be expert in how buildings are put together and they also have decent grasp of building services .

The hierarchy of achieving an energy efficient building is

    1a. Fabric
    1b Ventilation strategy

Sort these out FIRST . Get your energy demand down as low as you possibly can . Then and only then start looking at

    2 Services . ( Heat pump - what heat pump ? )

AT's are uniquely suited to you a new house self builder

Much as any other professions would like to claim otherwise - they cannot perform the task as well .

I am an AT so bear that bias in mind .

Expect a flood of protest to my view point

I should add that you should appoint an AT to prepare tender drawings for pricing , to inspect the works and certify payments during the build , issue completion certs .... and finally the BER cert

    .
