Hi I am in the market for some sort of Iphone like product.

    http://dealextreme.com/products.dx/category.511

I found these rip offs on dealextreme,

the fact it is not an apple product does not worry me too much, but has anyone tried some of these out?
would be slightly worried that the software would be bad and the menus etc might be slow.

alternatively what prices would the earlier iphones be going for these days?

    thanks.

Generally, any phone that touts itself as an "iPhone killer" is pretty bad. Stay clear of phones like the Tocco. If you're looking for phones that would be in the same league as an iPhone, try the Nokia N97, Palm Pre (not out here yet), Blackberry Bold or any phone running Android. None of these are cheap SIM-free mind, you're talking in the region of €400 - €700. On contract, you can get an iPhone for as little as €99 and a bold for even less, I think. The N97 is only SIM-free at the moment and will cost you €650. You could also pick up a Nokia N95. It's pretty old and the software isn't great, but a lot of people swear by them. You can pick one of these up for around €200.

god, don't do it! I have experienced these Chinese copy's before and they are nasty....slow...cheap and will fall to pieces. You would be better adding an extra 100-150 and getting a second hand iphone

    Heretic. GET OUT. :D

If you spell out exactly what you are looking for, it might help.

i.e. are you looking for an iPhone clone, or a phone that has comparable features to the iPhone?

As for an older model of the iPhone, you should be able to pick one up for around €100 or so, I would imagine.

    ha,

I think I was interested in the clones, but on further thought if it did not run as smoothly as the iphone I would lose interest and want to upgrade so I might as well get a good one while I'm at it.

I want a phone that also is a music player and has wifi internet.

I have not seen any old iphones for less than 200 but I certainly would be interested for 100euro.

    thanks.

From reading threads over on the Mobiles/PDA forum, the clones aren't worth the plastic they are made from. I have no hands-on experience of them, it's purely what people are saying.

You will not beat the iPhone for playing music, full stop. I've tried a few different phones, and I can say without question, there is no comparison when it comes to playing music and videos, for that matter.

And when you are talking about WiFi, am I correct in assuming you mean to surf the net (as opposed to using net connectivity for the likes of Instant Messenger clients, Skype and other net-aware apps)?

This is probably the other area where the iPhone excels - you simply won't get the same web experience on any phone currently available. Phones on their way may be better in some respects (look at the Palm Pre, for example), but of the current crop, the iPhone reigns supreme. Yes, it's missing flash and yes, it's missing Java, but it still is the best web-browsing user interface out there.

(that sounded very fanboyish, but it's the truth :o)

I have to agree with Tom Dunne 100%. I was looking into getting an iPhone-type phone that could replace my iPod Touch, to save me carrying around an MP3 player and a Phone. But none can beat the iPhone when it comes to media playback. The iPhones UI is so easy to use and looks gorgeous, but when it comes to other phones such as the Nokia 5800 and the Tocco the UI is horrible and you some times have to use a stylus which is a waste of time. Multitouch on the iPhone makes scrolling through songs a breeze and the iPhone has the added bonus of coming in capacities up to 32GB and has a lovely 3.5" screen.

The same can be said about web browsing but Tom seems to have covered everything. It simply can't be bet.

I've had a look at several phones recently with a view to buying a smartphone like the iPhone. At the moment, the iPhone seems to me to be the best option on the market. However, personally I would rather wait for the Palm Pre (due out here in Sept I am told) or a new Android phone (also more due out later this year). The new iPhone 3G S offers a lot less than I expected - adding Copy and Paste as a headline feature in 2009 seems a bit odd for a product that was so innovative in other ways when first released.

It is a question of personal preference whether you go with an iPhone or Palm Pre, but I see the smaller size of the Palm Pre as an advantage. Also, its smooth multi-threaded approach to running multiple applications at once and the quality and performance of the screen are getting rave reviews. The Palm's removable battery and the commitment from Palm to support Flash very soon are also big bonuses. The lack of Flash support on the iPhone is big omission in my opinion, as many sites I visit use Flash.

I agree with the posters above. If you want an iPhone, avoid the cheap copy/clones from Asia. Those are merely for people who want to look like they have an iPhone, without the cost associated with it. You cannot possibly expect a genuine iPhone performance from those.

Have to disagree about the 5800. I have an iPod touch, and I haven't used it since I got the 5800 about a month ago. Music menus are just as easy to use, and I haven't had to use the stylus yet. it did take me about a week to get used to the 5800 touchscreen, and its still not quite as good as the Touch, but I still can't get the lastest FW update thanks to bloody Vodafone, which is supposed to speed up the responsiveness.

I agree about the Palm Pre. The software looks excellent, judging from the videos I've seen of it. It's a shame about the hardware though. The screen is made of plastic, 8GB is the max memory it can have and that keyboard doesn't look great. Let's hope their App Catalogue improves too.
