Why is it tricky to resize a window in Ubuntu?

I love Ubuntu but one thing that truly bugs me is how tricky it is to resize a window using the mouse. In Fedora (or Windows XP), you simply put the mouse anywhere near the edge of ethe frame you wish to drag but in Ubuntu, you need to be bang-on the edge or you get no traction.

Does anyone else notice this? Does anyone know how to improve it?

Haven't found that myself. I've about 10 pixels for window grab / resize.

    I remember it being very annoying. I don't think there's a fix.

Yeah it's annoying trying to click on the side of the window but it's easy to resize from the bottom right.

Didn't know about alt+middle mouse button.. that's handy.

Resizing windows gets old fast anyway.

If you ever get board with Gnome try out a tiling window manager like dwm, wmii or xmonad.

Between dwm and firefox+vimperator I rarely have to reach for the mouse.

I have noticed this, I don't have a easy middle mouse button.

Khannie: how did you get a bigger grab size?

I didn't do anything I don't think. It was just like that.*

*may not be true. I did arse around with that gconf editor thing ages and ages ago, but I don't remember setting any grab size setting tbh.

Alt+right click and drag should do it.
