Yeh just thought it was interesting. It doesn't take away from the image for me just adds more mystery!

Sure it's the same with the Storming Of The Reichstag (or whatever the official name of thatg photo is - the one with the russian soldiers hoisting the flag over the German Parliament) - lots of famous photos are staged - Im still not sure if it takes away from the picture when I look at it. Y'know?

Are there any iconic photos that weren't staged?

The famous one of a US sailor grabbing and kissing a girl on the street on V day - staged.

The Robert Doisneau photo of a 'couple kissing in public - staged with models.

The comely female tennis player nonchalantly scratching her naked buttock as she walks away from the camera - staged

I am somewhat saddened that genuinely great spontaneous shots seem few and far between, but gladdened that my own spontaneous efforts now seem better. ;-)

my opinion of Capa has really gone down because of this...who would shoot a man just to stage a photograph?

Although - it would be very hard to shoot a gun and a camera at the same time....the photo must be real.

A lot would have been staged for propaganda reasons, including the said hammer and sycle flag been raised over the reichstag

Wasn't the raising of the flag of Iowo Jima the same?

Yup, as far as Im aware, anyway.

on a similar vein, Is it true that some college in the US had some rogue students go to Yosemite Naional Park and write the college's initials in a mountain as they were aware of Ansel Adams' work and wanted a 'mention', so to speak???
