I gave this a thread of it's own as I feel it deserves airing. Please do not let it turn into a hunting versus conservation debate. If it does it will be locked.

Just give us your opinion of the council members contributions.

By the way, I never knew the pinemartin (sic) was a bird!!:p

    I can't find a petition.
The article was back on 26th May and the closing date for objections is Tuesday June 9

Councillor Michael Newman said that he had a “bellyful” these directives and with “interference” in the everyday life of good honest country people. “We are seeing species that have never been seen before in Ireland being introduced by these people,” he said. “Look at the Pinemartin, the most nasty vicious bird that you have ever seen. They were never in Ireland but have been introduced,” he said.

Good man, done your homework there Michael.

I see the same genius (councillor Newman) got a letter printed in Saturday's IT - the paper must really be dropping its standards given the wild assertions and total ignorance of Irish Wildlife this individual displays. Its a depressing thought that this individual has only just got elected. The electorate are really to blame for the state this country is in, when you see gombeen men like this being continually being put in positions of power. Does Westmeath Co. Co. not have a heritage officer to stop these people embarrassing the county.

I have been seeing ravens and pine martens in the midlands for the past twenty five years... but then I was looking for them :D!

I feel a letter to the Times coming on...

well added my comment - such an idiot tbh

was interviewing people a few years ago for a job in a woodlands where there are pinemartin - a lot of locals turned up for the interviews and most thought pinemartin were introduced by duchas to their area and a lot were trapping them - the place had them since the year dot but no amount of trying would convince some people.

ah well will remember the name for next time - although I vote in westmeath I never heard of him
